SIAM Fellows

Congratulations to the Newest Class of SIAM Fellows

SIAM Fellows are nominated by peers for excellence in research and/or industrial work, educational and community activities, or other forms of achievements related to the goals of our organization. This year, we are pleased to recognize 28 distinguished members as Fellows. Check out the full list and details on all 2019 Fellows and learn more about the SIAM Fellows Program.

Spread the Word: It's Math Stat Awareness Month

April is Mathematics and Statistics Awareness Month! We all know that math and statistics play a vital part in everyday life. This month, let's share that message with those who may not know. Help spread the word by sharing past posters. Hear from Kathleen Kavanagh, SIAM Vice President for Education, why she feels this month is important.

M3 Challenge Judging Concludes, Top Teams Announced

In late March, 14 computation professionals and applied mathematicians came to SIAM offices in Philadelphia to read and assess the top papers submitted by high school teams across the U.S. for MathWorks Math Modeling Challenge, a program organized by SIAM. The outcome was a list of finalists, semi-finalists and honorable mention teams, plus a handful of technical computing award contenders (to be announced mid-April). Thank you to the below group of judges, and congratulations to the winning teams (here)! The final judging and award ceremony takes place April 29 in New York City.

  • Kelly Black, University of Georgia
  • Eric Eager, University of Wisconsin
  • Ben Galluzzo, Clarkson University
  • Jennifer Gorman, College of Southern Nevada
  • Veera Holdai, Salisbury University
  • Katie Kavanagh, Clarkson University
  • Candice Price, University of San Diego
  • Delray Shultz, Millersville University
  • Barbara Wainwright, Salisbury University
  • Ted Wendt, Carroll College
  • George Yates, Youngstown University

Technical Computing Scholarship Award Judges:

  • Pat Gorman, University of Nevada-Las Vegas
  • Erin Byrne, MathWorks
Karen Bliss, Virginia Military Institute, Director of Judging

SIAM Welcomes New Editorial Assistant

The team here at SIAM has grown recently, bringing aboard a new Editorial Assistant in the Book Acquisitions Department. Get to know Mellisa Pascale - read her Q&A.

UM Student Chapter Math Modeling Contest

Each fall since 2015, the SIAM Student Chapter at the University of Minnesota has held a local mathematical modeling contest designed to encourage undergraduate students to get more involved in the math community and to participate in other math modeling competitions. Learn more about this chapter's stellar event.

Publishing News & Notes

Books Hot Off the Press

This self-contained book describes and analyzes reported software failures related to the major topics within scientific computing: mathematical modeling of phenomena; numerical analysis; mathematical aspects and complexity of algorithms, systems, or software; concurrent computing; and numerical data. Learn more.

This monograph provides an introduction to basic analytical, computational, and modeling issues and to some of the latest developments in complexity, singularity, and anomaly using nonlocal continuum models. Learn more.

Math in Our Lives Series: SIAM Journal on Dynamical Systems

How can math affect Olympic diving, public opinion, or flight safety? These are topics of recent SIAM journal articles, and addressed in our NEW video series - Math in our Lives! We'll be releasing one video each month through July 2019. Watch this video to find out how momentum and shape changes of dives can be described as math models, how people's social networks impact their opinions and the emergence of opinion clusters, and how math can help make flying safer. Stay tuned for more series videos! Learn more about SIAM Journal on Applied Dynamical Systems (SIADS) and watch the video.
