MATH IN THE NEWS

FROM SIAM HQ

4 Weeks Left: Vote in the SIAM Elections

The SIAM General Election closes in just 4 weeks – on November 8. Haven’t voted yet? Not to worry – read candidate bios and statements and vote using the instructions and unique voting credentials that should have landed in your inbox September 7 (and again September 27). If you did not receive your voting creds, email [email protected] and we’ll send them your way. Thanks again for your vote! Learn more about the election and candidates.

Take a Look: New Online Community for Dynamical Systems

The newly updated and modernized DSWeb online community has officially launched! This new platform is a state-of-the-art way for Dynamical Systems activity group members (and any interested non-members) to learn the latest news about the group, network, and find information and resources relating to their interest area. DSWeb is now integrated with SIAM’s Association Management System, too, so facilitates personalized features based on attributes such as SIAM and activity group membership, committee participation, conference attendance, and more. We think it’s pretty cool, but see for yourself at dsweb.siam.org

Grants Available: Mathematical Congress of the Americas (MCA)

This year, there is a new travel grant available for the Mathematical Congress of the Americas (MCA), providing up to 100 partial grants for U.S. mathematicians attending the meeting, which will take place July 24-28, 2017 in Montreal, Canada. It is expected that this program will provide support for both U.S.-based invited speakers (senior mathematicians) and early career mathematicians. SIAM is proud to be a member of the Math Council of Americas which sponsors the MCA. Learn more about this grant opportunity and how to apply.

And while you’re at it, remember to apply for your Student Travel Award for one of the many upcoming SIAM conferences, including the Annual Meeting happening in Pittsburgh, PA in July 2017!

Call for Proposals: Gene Golub SIAM Summer School 2018

We want to hear from you! SIAM is calling for letters of intent for proposals for topics and organizers for the 2018 Gene Golub SIAM Summer School (G2S3). The proposed two-week school for about 40 graduate students is to be held during summer 2018. The deadline for the Letters of Intent is January 31, 2017. Learn more and submit your proposals.

PUBLISHING NEWS & NOTES

Video: Approximation Theory and Approximation Practice

Approximation Theory and Approximation Practice (SIAM, 2013) is a textbook on classical polynomial and rational approximation theory for the twenty-first century. It is aimed at advanced undergraduates and graduate students across all of applied mathematics. And now – a full set of video lectures from this book by Nick Trefethen is now available! The lectures include Chebfun demos of almost all the topics in the book. Learn more about the book and watch the videos now.

Hot Off the Press: Discourse on Fourier Series

Cornelius Lanczos

Originally published in 1966, this well-written and still-cited text covers Fourier analysis, a foundation of science and engineering. Many modern textbooks are filled with specialized terms and equations that may be confusing, but this book uses a friendly, conversational tone to clarify the material and engage the reader. The author meticulously develops the topic and uses 161 problems integrated into the text to walk the student down the simplest path to a solution. Learn more.

FEATURED VIDEO

Video Series: What is Mathematical Modeling?

It’s almost that time, folks! Registration for the Moody’s Mega Math (M3) Challenge opens next month. Though dedicated to prepping high school students with modeling resources to succeed in the M3 Challenge, the recently released math modeling video series is also a great resource for all secondary and even undergrad students! This series introduces the modeling process and dives into the specific steps to modeling, a process which helps you represent, analyze, make predictions or otherwise provide insight into real world phenomena. And please remember to share these resources with your colleagues! Watch now.

CONFERENCE UPDATES

Bring Your Child to Work: Apply for a Child Care Grant

Don’t forget! SIAM offers grants of $250 per family for SIAM meeting attendees who wish to bring children with them. Attendees are responsible for making their own arrangements for child care. Currently child care grant applications are open for the SIAM Conference on Computational Science and Engineering, happening February 27-March 3, 2017, Atlanta Georgia, USA. The deadline is January 2, 2017. Learn more about these grants and apply now.
