Renew Your SIAM Membership for 2019
There’s more reason than ever to be a member of our community. With the end of the year in sight, please remember to renew your membership to continue enjoying your benefits. And remember, if you are a non-student member, you can nominate up to two students per year for free student memberships. Renew now.
Submit Your Work: New Data Science Book Series
Did you know – SIAM recently launched a new Data Science Book Series! Data science is a forward-looking field and is seeing tremendous energy and growth. The books will be for anyone interested in the mathematical, computational, and scientific aspects of data science, including mathematicians, statisticians, computer scientists, engineers, life scientists, and data scientists. The books will be relevant to all career levels and all sectors of employment. Have book ideas? We want to hear about them. Learn more.
Apply Now: Science and Technology Fellowship
Applications are now open for the 2019-2020 ASA/ACM/AMS/IMS/MAA/SIAM Science and Technology Policy Fellowship! This fellowship focuses on data science and related expertise such as machine learning, data visualization, and causal inference to meet legislative and policymaking changes. Individuals who are U.S. citizens with a Ph.D. in statistics, data science, mathematics, or a closely related field are encouraged to apply. Applications are due by January 15, 2019. Learn more.
Introducing New SIAM Staff
The SIAM family has grown over recent months, with three new staff members joining the Customer Service, Membership, and Marketing teams. Get to know these folks a bit, and leave a comment to welcome them! Meet Nicole Gawel, Amanda Spadel, and Cameron Stockton.
Welcoming New Activity Group Officers
SIAM is pleased to announce new officers for several activity groups. SIAM Activity Groups (SIAGs) provide a more focused forum for SIAM members interested in exploring one of the areas of applied mathematics, computational science, or applications. Officers begin their terms on January 1, 2019 and will serve two-year terms through the end of 2020 except where noted. Thank you to all of our outgoing SIAG officers! Hot Off the Press: Three New SIAM Books
Scientific Computing: An Introductory Survey, Revised Second Edition
This book presents a broad overview of methods and software for solving mathematical problems arising in computational modeling and data analysis, including proper problem formulation, selection of effective solution algorithms, and interpretation of results. Its focus is on the motivation and ideas behind the algorithms presented. This updated edition includes pointers to Python software and the Chebfun package, and expansions on barycentric formulation for Lagrange polynomial interpretation and stochastic methods. About 100 interactive educational modules accompany the book. Learn more.
Introduction to the Scenario Approach
This concise, practical book is for anyone interested in data-driven decision-making. Accessible to experts and nonexperts alike, it offers an overview of the scenario approach, including numerous examples and diverse applications from a broad range of domains. Practitioners can find "easy-to use recipes" while theoreticians will benefit from a rigorous treatment of the theoretical foundations of the method. Learn more.
An Introduction to Singular Integrals
In just over 100 pages, this book provides basic, essential knowledge of some of the tools of real analysis: the Hardy–Littlewood maximal operator, the Calderón–Zygmund theory, the Littlewood–Paley theory, interpolation of spaces and operators, and the basics of H1 and BMO spaces. This concise text offers brief proofs and exercises of various difficulties designed to challenge and engage students. Learn more.
