The Impact of Philanthropy on SIAM’s Mission

At the core of SIAM's existence is a dedication to advancing the application of mathematics and computational science. Since its inception in 1952, SIAM has remained committed to fostering the development of methodologies crucial for tackling real-world challenges and bridging the gap between mathematics and the realms of science and technology. Your financial support can help us continue carrying out that mission. Learn more about how you can support SIAM.

Philanthropy is a key component of SIAM’s efforts to further support those interested in pursuing careers in applied mathematics, computational science, and data science—whether it be in academia, industry, or government. We could not continue to serve our members or the broader global community without our financial supporters. This year, we have seen the outcomes of generous gifts from our dedicated members and supporters that established new programs and travel awards including the Postdoctoral Support Program, the SIAM-Simons Undergraduate Summer Research Program, and the Life Sciences and Dynamical Systems Travel Fund.

What You Can Support

Your philanthropic support is a vote of confidence in our efforts and helps make SIAM the leading applied mathematics and computational sciences society in the world. Learn more about our donation options, in which you can designate a gift to a specific SIAM program or give to our general fund.

SIAM General Fund

The SIAM General Fund is vital to SIAM's success and mission. When members make a donation to the general fund, they are enhancing the SIAM experience for our entire community. Not only does it contribute to SIAM Student Chapters and the SIAM Fellows program, but the General Fund is also invested back into our membership. From funding many SIAM prizes and awards to supporting diversity, equity, and inclusion initiatives like the MGB-SIAM Early Career Fellowship.

James Crowley Fund for Student Support

The SIAM Board established the James Crowley Fund to honor the 2020 retirement of  Dr. James Crowley as SIAM's Executive Director. The fund provides support for applied mathematics students and for initiatives such as SIAM Student Chapters and their important role in encouraging interdisciplinary collaboration and networking of students and faculty; student prizes; SIAM career fairs; scholarship opportunities; new student programming; and other student needs.

Math Modeling Teacher Support Fund

The Math Modeling Teacher Support Fund was established in honor of Michelle Montgomery, founding Program Director of SIAM's MathWorks Math Modeling Challenge program, upon her retirement. This fund aims to support teachers who want to bring math modeling learning and experience to their students.

SIAM Postdoctoral Fund

The SIAM Postdoctoral Fund was established with a generous gift from Drs. Martin Golubitsky and Barbara Keyfitz to provide financial support for postdoctoral scholars to receive needed mentoring and collaboration opportunities that enable successful career advancement via the SIAM Postdoctoral Support Program.

Student Travel Fund

SIAM Student Travel Awards are here to help students gain the experience and exposure that comes from attending and presenting at SIAM Conferences. Travel awards are intended to help students defray costs of their attendance, like travel and registration fees, which may be restrictive to students. SIAM typically provides $250,000+ in student travel awards annually.

Supporting a Common Mission

SIAM is not just an organization; it's a driving force propelling the application of mathematics and computational science to new heights. Philanthropic support helps make SIAM’s awards and honors possible, fosters our ability to help students around the world attend SIAM conferences, helps maintain our leading journals and publications, and empowers numerous other SIAM initiatives. With your support, we can continue our important work and expand our reach.
