Remembering H.T. Banks.

The SIAM community lost a valuable member on Wednesday, January 1, 2019 when H.T. "Tom" Banks passed from serious illness. Banks was the Managing Editor of the SIAM Journal on Control and Optimization (SICON) from 1979-1981 (having served earlier as an Associate Editor), SIAM's VP for Publications from 1982 to 1985 (the first person to carry that title), and served on the SIAM Board of Trustees from 1997 to 2002 (elected Chair of the Board). He served the SIAM community in many other capacities, including chairing the SIAM Activity Group on Control and serving on the Reid Prize selection committee.

Banks supervised over 50 doctoral students and numerous postdocs during his tenure at Brown University, the University of Southern California, and, most recently, North Carolina State University. He was a tremendous teacher and mentor to students and postdocs, and a wonderful colleague and friend to us all.
