Philadelphia, PA- The Society for Industrial and Applied Mathematics (SIAM) awards the 2017 John von Neumann Lecture prize to Bernard J. Matkowsky of Northwestern University for his leading contributions to the methods and applications of matched asymptotics and singular perturbations. Matkowsky delivered the associated prize lecture, "Singular Perturbations in Noisy Dynamical Systems," at the SIAM Annual Meeting in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, on July 11.

Matkowsky is recognized for his successful impact on applications to problems exhibiting resonance, the effect of noise on deterministic dynamical systems, bifurcation phenomena, and to pattern formation. He is an international leader in the mathematical theory of gaseous combustion and combustion synthesis. Matkowsky accepted this award at SIAM's Annual Meeting Prizes and Awards Luncheon in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, following in the steps of his mentors.
"I am honored and humbled by this award, Matkowsky says. “It is particularly meaningful to me, as four previous awardees were my teachers and inspirations, including Kurt Friedrichs, Peter Lax, Jurgen Moser, and most importantly, my adviser Joe Keller. To have my name linked to theirs is indeed a great honor.”
Matkowsky is John Evans Professor of Engineering Sciences and Applied Mathematics, Mathematics, and (by courtesy) Mechanical Engineering in the McCormick School of Engineering at Northwestern University. He is an Institute for Scientific Information Highly-Cited Researcher. He has published in excess of 250 papers on a wide variety of topics and is recognized as one of SIAM's leading authors, publishing 67 papers in SIAM journals since 1969.
Matkowsky received his Ph.D. in 1966 from what is now the Courant Institute of Mathematical Sciences of New York University.
The John von Neumann Lecture prize was established in 1959 in honor of the Hungarian-American mathematician John von Neumann and the recipient is awarded an honorarium of $5,000 and a framed, hand-calligraphed certificate.
