SIAM Welcomes Two New Staff Members

The team here at SIAM has grown recently, bringing aboard a new Digital Communications Coordinator and SIAM Prizes and Awards Coordinator. Meet Ashley and Amanda!

Ashley Lake, Digital Communications Coordinator

Ashley attended the Fashion Institute of Technology in New York where she studied advertising and marketing communications. She started her career as a Public Relations Intern at a youth development non-profit, The Fresh Air Fund, and then joined them as the Communications Assistant. She then moved on to work at Housing Works, an AIDS service organization, as the Marketing Coordinator and Publicist. And most recently, she worked at enCourage Kids Foundation as the Manager of Special Events and Stewardship. For fun, Ashley loves to ride her Peloton, browse the aisles at Target, or catch up on the latest episodes of The Real Housewives. She’s excited to be a part of the Marketing Department at SIAM!

Q: Why are you excited to be working at SIAM?

A: I’m excited to bring awareness to SIAM and help to further the mission and awareness of the organization. The work SIAM does, bringing together the movers and shakers of the STEM fields, benefits so many and makes a positive impact. I'm looking forward to helping the organization grow!

Q: Why do you think STEM is important?

A: STEM keeps the world moving in a forward direction. While the pandemic has been challenging, research and developments in STEM have helped to make navigating the world a little easier. From a vaccine to the ability to order groceries on a smart phone, none of it could have been done without scientists, mathematicians, and researchers.

Q: What is one thing that most people do not know about you?

A: I love to go shopping for fabulous thrift finds. I have a knack for finding beautiful and unique vintage pieces that add pizazz to my wardrobe. I did go to fashion school after all!

Amanda Winward, SIAM Prizes and Awards Coordinator

Amanda graduated from the University of Delaware, where she studied English with a concentration in creative writing as well as history and Spanish. Prior to coming to SIAM, she was the General Books Department Manager at the University of Delaware Bookstore where she worked with students, staff, and faculty to coordinate everything from textbook orders to web sales to book signings for campus events. In her free time Amanda enjoys reading fantasy and horror novels, horseback riding, thrift shopping, and baking (especially pies and cookies). She is looking forward to supporting the SIAM community through the Prizes & Awards program and getting to know her new colleagues.

Q: Why are you excited to be working at SIAM?

A: I’m looking forward to working at SIAM to help contribute to the advancement of mathematics which will, in turn, contribute to a better world. Personally, it’s important for me to do work that is both meaningful and fulfilling, and I believe that working at SIAM will help me achieve that goal. I’m also excited to be working with a group of people who have similar aspirations and interests.

Q: Why do you think STEM is important?

A: With the advancements made by STEM, we can live longer, more comfortable lives assisted by the technology that it has helped create. STEM keeps the world turning and allows us to stay connected in so many ways, which has become especially important in the past year. I’m eager to watch STEM research continue to grow in the coming years and see how it continues to improve humanity’s quality of life.

Q: What is one thing that most people do not know about you?

A: I love to bake; making homemade pies (crust and all) is one of my favorite ways to relax. Apple pie is my favorite to make, especially when I get to pick the apples myself!
