SIAM Welcomes a New Staff Member

The team here at SIAM has grown recently, bringing aboard Kai Allen, a Software Developer in the Information Management Systems Department.

Kai studied Computer Science at Millersville University, with a minor in Mathematics, and is currently pursuing an additional degree in Data Science. They have a decade of web development experience, most recently with VSolvit, LLC, where they led the VSolvit Machine Learning team for emerging technologies and a web development team rewriting an application for use by the Navy. Kai’s hobbies include nature photography, hiking with their dog, and playing tabletop RPGs. They are excited to apply their web development skills in support of the SIAM community.

Get to Know Kai

Q. Why are you excited to be working at SIAM?

A. I am excited to make a positive impact on the advancement of science and technology, which in turn makes a positive impact on the world. Mathematics has always been a passion of mine, so I am thrilled to be working with others who understand the value, importance, and wide applicability of math and STEM.

Q. Why do you think STEM is important?

A. STEM allows us to understand and shape our world. Just in the past year, scientists in many disciplines have worked to produce vaccines to fight COVID-19, and we have increasingly relied on communications systems designed and created by software engineers to maintain our social lives while social distancing. Medical advancements have extended and improved our lifetimes, including the asthma and allergy treatments that have saved my life. STEM is key in maintaining and improving the standard of living for everyone around us.

Q. What is one thing that most people do not know about you?

A. I enjoy playing musical instruments, including the hammered dulcimer, guitar, and ukulele. Mainly, I play traditional, folk, and rock music. I am looking forward to going back to jam sessions with other musicians when it is safe.
