SIAM General Election - Vote Now!
The SIAM 2017 General Election is now open! We have a strong slate of candidates and need your voice to select our future leaders. If you have questions or have not received your electronic ballot, please contact the SIAM Election Manager. Your vote counts – learn more about candidates and vote today!
Call for Proposals: 2019 Gene Golub SIAM Summer School
Are you interested in organizing the 2019 Gene Golub SIAM Summer School? The call for proposals is now open! Letters of intent in all areas of applied and computational mathematics will be considered. Funded from a legacy left to SIAM by Gene Golub, SIAM provides partial funding to run this program each year; organizers are commonly responsible for raising remaining funds needed. Deadline for letters of intent is January 1, 2018. Learn more about the call for proposals and submit yours.
SIAM News is Seeking Writers
Do you have a background in applied mathematical sciences and a strong interest in scientific writing? If so, we want you to be our next SIAM News author! Successful writers combine a strong mathematical background with the ability to explain technical concepts to our multidisciplinary audience, all while piquing reader interest in the broad applications of mathematics. Interested writers may email a resume and three science writing samples, if available, to [email protected] for consideration.
Unwrapped is Under Construction
You may have noticed some recent changes to our monthly e-newsletter - Unwrapped. We'll be transitioning the formatting of this e-newsletter over the next few months with the hopes of making Unwrapped as inviting and easy to read as possible. Thank you for your patience as we work through this process - and of course for your continued readership!
Leadership Spotlight: John Hopcroft Receives NAE Founders Award
The National Academy of Engineering is recognizing John Hopcroft with the Simon Ramo Founders Award for his research contributions and leadership in engineering. Among Hopcroft’s many contributions are his former service as Chair of SIAM’s Board of Trustees and his long-term presence on SIAM’s Financial Management Committee. These contributions are, of course, in addition to his significant accomplishments to advance the field of computer science. The award acknowledges outstanding professional, educational, and personal achievements to the benefit of society. Congratulations John, and thank you for your service! Learn more.

Hot Off the Press: New SIAM Books
Vector Extrapolation Methods with Applications
Avram Sidi
Vector Extrapolation Methods with Applications is the first book fully dedicated to the subject of vector extrapolation methods. It is a self-contained, up-to-date, and state-of-the-art reference on the theory and practice of the most useful methods. It covers all aspects of the subject, including development of the methods, their convergence study, numerically stable algorithms for their implementation, and their various applications. It also provides complete proofs in most places. As an interesting application, the author shows how these methods give rise to rational approximation procedures for vector-valued functions in the complex plane, a subject of importance in model reduction problems among others. Learn more.
First-Order Methods in Optimization
Amir Beck
The primary goal of this book is to provide a self-contained, comprehensive study of the main first-order methods that are frequently used in solving large-scale problems. First-order methods exploit information on values and gradients/subgradients (but not Hessians) of the functions composing the model under consideration. With the increase in the number of applications that can be modeled as large or even huge-scale optimization problems, there has been a revived interest in using simple methods that require low iteration cost as well as low memory storage. WATCH: Math Behind Sea Ice & Our Changing Planet
“Applied math and computational science are critical to understanding the world around us – to understand how that’s changing…we wouldn’t be able to start understanding climate change if it wasn’t for our understanding of applied math.” – Emily Shuckbergh, British Antarctic Survey. Watch the video, filmed at this summer's SIAM Annual Meeting!
