SIAM’s Response to Coronavirus, OP20 and UQ20 Cancelled

SIAM leadership and senior staff are carefully monitoring the international outbreak of the SARS-CoV-2/COVID-19 coronavirus. Up-to-date information on the coronavirus and its impact on SIAM conferences is available here. As of March 9, all SIAM conferences are expected to take place as scheduled with the exception of SIAM Conference on Optimization (OP20) and SIAM Conference on Uncertainty Quantification (UQ20), which regretfully have been cancelled.

Mexico Section of SIAM Holds Its First Annual Meeting

The Mexico Section of SIAM (MexSIAM) completed its first Annual Meeting this past December at the Ensenada Center for Scientific Research and Higher Education. Participants were from 20+ universities in Mexico and the United States. Learn more about the event here.

Talking BIG Jobs Live Interview is March 18

The third interview of the Talking BIG Jobs Interview Series will take place March 18 and will feature Sarah Minucci as the interviewer, and guest Helen Moore, Director of Applied Mathematics at Applied BioMath, as the interviewee. Participants will learn how Dr. Moore's background as a mathematician has informed her career and her current work. The interview will take place March 18 at 3 p.m. EST, and will be webcast live. Learn more and register for the webinar.

High School Students Model Future of Electric Trucking in M3 Challenge

Driven by regulatory pressure to cut diesel pollution, commercial truck makers are working hard to deliver battery electric vehicles. Predicting the market for electric commercial trucks is not easy, making intelligent decisions about the necessary charging infrastructure is complex, and weighing the economic and environmental implications for the communities surrounding the trucking corridors is essential. These issues were all part of the problem 760 teams comprised of nearly 3,500 students examined February 28–March 2 while competing for $100,000 in scholarships in MathWorks Math Modeling Challenge. Learn more.

March is Women's History Month

It’s Women’s History Month! Some of the current women in SIAM leadership talk about their roles here and how they believe SIAM is making a positive impact. Thank you to all of the many women - past and present - who have made SIAM what it is today. Read more.

SIAM Membership Celebrates Many Milestones

2019 was a banner year for SIAM membership! We welcomed 1,450+ nonstudent members to SIAM’s global community of applied mathematicians and computational scientists, and set first-time records for early career members and members from countries that qualify for Outreach Membership. Read more.

Invite a Visiting Lecturer to Your Institution

The SIAM Visiting Lecturer Program (VLP) is an opportunity for institutions to invite applied mathematicians and computational scientists to speak at their campuses. For the month of March, we are featuring VLP speakers Veronica Mejia Bustamante (Vice President at JP Morgan), Veena Mendiratta (Research Leader at Nokia Bell Labs), Elisa Rosales (Senior Data Analyst at UMass Memorial Health Care), and Helen Moore (Director of Applied Mathematics at Applied BioMath). Conference Updates

OP20 and UQ20 Cancelled Due to Coronavirus

After careful review of the information available on the international outbreak of the SARS-CoV-2/COVID-19 coronavirus, SIAM’s leadership and executive office have made the difficult decision to cancel SIAM Conference on Uncertainty Quantification (UQ20) and SIAM Conference on Optimization (OP20). More information on this decision and up-to-date information on SIAM’s response to the coronavirus outbreak are available here. As of March 9, all other SIAM conferences are expected to take place as scheduled.

Looking Ahead to the 2020 SIAM/CAIMS Annual Meeting (AN20)

For the second time ever, SIAM and the Canadian Applied and Industrial Mathematics Society (CAIMS) will hold their annual meetings jointly this year, in Toronto, Canada, July 6–10. Read Unwrapped in the coming months for more information on interesting plenaries, prize talks, and special lectures, as well as industry events, professional development sessions, Student Days, the career fair, and much more. AN20 will run jointly with SIAM Conference on Imaging Science and SIAM Workshop on Network Science.

MDS20 & SDM20 Sponsorship Deadline Extended

The deadline for sponsoring events and activities at SIAM's brand new Conference on Mathematics of Data Science (MDS20) or SIAM International Conference on Data Mining (SDM20) has been extended to March 16. If your organization is interested in learning more about sponsor options, check out the sponsorship forms for MDS20 and SDM20.
