Math Modeling Handbook

New Handbook Resource: Math Modeling: Computing and Communicating

Brand new! Written for students who have some experience with computation and an interest in math modeling, this handbook is designed to take you from basic graphic calculator or spreadsheet experience to the next level, which includes programming basics, working with large data sets, and visualization techniques. The handbook is also written for teachers who will assist students as they incorporate software into the math modeling process. Learn more and download the handbook.

High School Students Consider Solutions for U.S. Food-Insecure Population

Keeping wholesome and nutritious food in our communities and out of landfills can help the 42 million Americans that live in food insecure households. But what are the best ways to do this? That’s the problem 4,175 students examined last weekend while competing for $100,000 in scholarships in MathWorks Math Modeling (M3) Challenge, a math modeling competition for high school students, organized by SIAM. Learn more about the 2018 problem topic.

Congratulations, Dr. Juan Meza

Longtime SIAM member and volunteer, Dr. Juan Meza, has been appointed as Division Director for the NSF Division of Mathematical Sciences (DMS), effective February 20, 2018. He joins the NSF from the University of California, Merced, where he served most recently as the Dean of Natural Sciences. Congratulations on this well-deserved appointment, Dr. Meza!

Next Month: Math Stat Awareness Month

Mathematics and Statistics Awareness Month is April! Next month, people throughout the world will learn more about the importance of the mathematical sciences on society, and that math and statistics play a vital part in everyday life. Follow on Facebook, and help spread the word by sharing past flyers. Learn more.

New Class of SIAM Fellows Coming Soon

Thank you for sending us your nominations for the newest class of SIAM Fellows! Each year, the SIAM Fellows Program helps raise visibility of the mathematical sciences by honoring outstanding individuals in the field based on distinguished research contributions and service to the community. The 2018 Class of SIAM Fellows will be announced later this month and recognized at the 2018 SIAM Annual Meeting (AN18). Keep an eye out and learn more about the SIAM Fellows Program in the meantime.

Publishing News & Notes

New SIAM Journal: Mathematics of Data Science

SIAM Journal on Mathematics of Data Science (SIMODS) will begin taking author submissions this spring. The journal will publish work that advances mathematical, statistical, and computational methods in the context of data and information sciences. SIMODS invites papers that present significant advances in this context, including applications to science, engineering, business, and medicine. Tammy Kolda leads SIMODS as Editor-in-Chief. Read the Editorial Policy and find out who makes up the rest of the Editorial Board. Watch this page for more info!

Hot Off the Press: Mathematics Motivated by the Social and Behavioral Sciences

Donald G. Saari

These themes are described in an introductory, expository, and accessible manner by exploring new ways to handle dynamics and evolutionary game theory, to identify subtleties of decision and voting methods, to recognize unexpected modeling concerns, and to introduce new approaches with which to examine game theory. Applications range from avoiding undesired consequences when designing policy to identifying unanticipated voting (where the "wrong" person could win), nonparametric statistical, and economic "supply and demand" properties. SIAM Annual Meeting 2018

It's time to start planning for this year's Annual Meeting, taking place July 9-13 in Portland, Oregon! Learn more.

ICIAM19: Speaker List & Dates

More information is now available about the 2019 International Congress on Industrial and Applied Mathematics (ICIAM 2019) to be held July 15-19, in Valencia, Spain. Organizers have just listed the stellar list of invited speakers, which includes some names that should be familiar to SIAM members. Submissions for minisymposia open this month, and the deadline for submissions is November 5, 2018. In support of ICIAM, SIAM will not be holding an Annual Meeting in 2019. To keep up with the meeting, sign up for the ICIAM 2019 newsletter.

CSE19 Dates & Location Announced

Mark your calendar! The 2019 SIAM Conference on Computational Science and Engineering (CSE19) is happening February 25 through March 1, 2019 in Spokane, Washington, USA. The call for contributions and further details about hotels will appear on the conference website in May 2018. Stay tuned!

Prizes & Awards

Open for Nominations! Three Prizes for CSE19

All three of these prizes will be awarded at the 2019 SIAM Conference on Computational Science and Engineering (CSE19) in February 2019 in Spokane, Washington, USA.

Edward Ott Awarded Jürgen Moser Lecture

Edward Ott of the University of Maryland was awarded the Jürgen Moser Lecture at the 2017 SIAM Conference on Applications of Dynamical Systems (DS17). Ott was recognized for his extensive and influential contributions to nonlinear dynamics, including seminal work on chaos theory and on the dynamics of physical systems, and for his service to the nonlinear dynamics community. Learn more about his research in this Q&A spotlight.

Martin Wechselberger Awarded J. D. Crawford Prize

Martin Wechselberger of the University of Sydney was awarded the J. D. Crawford Prize at the 2017 SIAM Conference on Applications of Dynamical Systems (DS17). Wechselberger was recognized for breakthrough insights, highlighting the importance of canards and mixed-mode oscillations, that have application to neuroscience and open up new fields of research for dynamical systems with multiple time-scales. Learn more about his research in this Q&A spotlight.

Javad Lavaei Awarded SIAG/CST Prize

Javad Lavaei of the University of California, Berkeley is the 2017 recipient of the SIAM Activity Group on Control and Systems Theory (SIAG/CST) Prize. He received the award and delivered a lecture at the SIAM Conference on Control and Systems Theory (CT17). The award recognizes Lavaei for the design of computationally efficient methods solving a broad class of nonlinear optimization problems arising in systems theory and control.
