MATH IN THE NEWS

FROM SIAM HQ

SIAM Responds to White House Executive Order on Visas and Immigration

We are proud to have signed a multi-society letter, with the endorsement of our top elected officers, which urges the US President Donald Trump to rescind his recent Executive Order on Immigration. This cause is important to SIAM because we feel this order fails to encourage the open expression of exchange of ideas necessary for advancement of science and technology and because the actions discriminate against members of our community. Learn more and tell us your thoughts in the comments.

Read it Now: SIAM Journal on Applied Algebra and Geometry

It’s official! Our newest journal – SIAM Journal on Applied Algebra and Geometry (SIAGA) – has published online this month, joining our 16 other SIAM journals. As future articles are accepted, SIAGA will feature continuous electronic publication with articles posted as they complete production. Check out the first published articles, read the introduction from Editor-in-Chief Bernd Sturmfels, and find out more about this brand new journal. Don’t forget to watch and share the informational animation video, too!

Welcome New Activity Group Officers

New officers have been elected for 13 SIAM activity groups! Thanks to all candidates for participating in the process. Not part of an activity group? Network with mathematicians in your research area by joining one of our 21 communities. They’re just $15 per activity group, and students can join up to two groups for free! Meet our new leadership and learn more about joining.

Update: Is There a SIAM Section Near You?

We’re pleased to share that, due to increased interest, we have revived some inactive SIAM sections, and created a few new ones too! Sections are regional and national subgroups of SIAM members that organize lectures, meetings, and other activities to serve members in their regions. Want to see if there’s a section near you? Check out our list and learn how you can start a section in your area if there isn’t one already!

Contribute to Discussion on SIAM News  Online

Did you know you can contribute to the discussion and leave feedback on SIAM News articles and blog posts? The news site is updated 1-3 times weekly with new articles and blog posts on a variety of technical topics as well as updates and announcements for the mathematical science community, science policy and funding information, and professional development advice. Joining the conversation is easy – just sign in through Disqus, Facebook, Twitter, or Google to post a comment, or to share your thoughts on articles via social media! Read and discuss on SIAM News online.

Congrats Newest Member Get a Member Winners!

The SIAM Member-Get-a-Member program encourages members to invite their colleagues to join SIAM. This past year, 99 members referred 124 colleagues who joined our organization as a result. In each of these cases, the new and existing members were entered into a prize drawing for freebies like iPads, SIAM memberships and more! Find out who won and how you can be on the winning list next year!

PUBLISHING NEWS & NOTES

Hot Off the Press: Differential Dynamical Systems, Revised Edition

James D. Meiss

This book begins with coverage of linear systems, including matrix algebra; the focus then shifts to foundational material on nonlinear differential equations, making heavy use of the contraction-mapping theorem. Subsequent chapters deal specifically with dynamical systems concepts—flow, stability, invariant manifolds, the phase plane, bifurcation, chaos, and Hamiltonian dynamics. Revisions include simplified and clarified proofs of a number of theorems, an expanded introduction to function spaces, additional exercises, and the correction of typographical errors. Learn more.
