SIAM Journal on Mathematics of Data Science: Frequently Asked Questions

SIAM Journal on Mathematics of Data Science (SIMODS) launched in 2018 and began publishing in 2019. The journal publishes work that advances mathematical, statistical, and computational methods in the context of data and information sciences. As part of its launch period, all content has been freely accessible. We have been thrilled to see the receptiveness and demand for the journal, most notably with the record-breaking number of submissions we received in the first few years. Starting in 2022, SIMODS will be included in the full SIAM Journals package on a subscription basis. Read the below FAQ to find out what you need to know about this transition, and please recommend SIMODS to your institutional librarian.

Q: Who should subscribe and why is SIMODS important?
A: Data science is becoming more and more ubiquitous, with jobs in the field anticipated to increase by 30% in the next decade. In addition to data scientists, this journal serves a broad community, including those working in applied mathematics, computer science, statistics, engineering, business, finance, medicine, healthcare, and far beyond . Data science is everywhere! SIMODS covers deep learning and neural networks, signal processing applications, network science, machine learning, real-time control, learning theory, computational methods, and much more in terms of both theory and applications. Any institution or individual interested in these topics should subscribe. Interested in learning more about data science? Watch this short video.

Q: How widely read is SIMODS?
A: SIMODS articles have been downloaded more than 100,000 times across more than 40 countries since its launch in 2019.

Q: Why does SIAM offer its journals on a subscription basis?
A: The subscription fees charged ensure that the highest editorial and production standards can be maintained for SIMODS, which in turn enables the journal to publish vetted research that you can trust. Costs include editorial support staff to process and efficiently manage journal submissions as well as maintain industry-leading standards of copyediting, and digital platforms and services for manuscript management, content hosting, and plagiarism checking, among others.

Q: How do SIAM prices compare to other publishers?
A: SIAM is a nonprofit organization, and the subscription prices for its highly-respected journals are significantly lower than for-profit publishers. SIAM has kept subscription prices low for decades, while still ensuring it can remain financially independent and maintain quality standards.

Q: What is SIMODS’ open access policy?
A: SIMODS authors retain highly liberal “green open access” rights which enable the posting of their accepted manuscripts on institutional repositories without an embargo. Furthermore, SIMODS offers a “hybrid open access” option whereby an author with available funding may pay an article processing charge (APC), and the article is then made freely accessible to all in perpetuity.

Q: How does SIMODS ensure equity for all countries in accessing its journals?
A:
SIAM provides free journal access to the list of developing countries defined as ‘Group A’ under the WHO’s Research 4 Life program. In addition, SIAM offers discounted tiered pricing for institutions based on their country.

Q: How do I sign up to be alerted when new SIMODS articles become available?
A:
Click here to sign up for SIMODS email alerts. (You'll need to log in to the SIAM Digital Library site or create an account if you don't have one already.)

Q: How can I recommend SIMODS to my institutional librarian?
A:
Please download and fill out this recommendation form and then forward it to your librarian or contact them directly and let them know you want to continue to receive SIAM Journal on Mathematics of Data Science at your institution. From the Editorial Board
"Our community has long waited for a perfectly fitting journal such as the SIAM Journal on Mathematics of Data Science, which applies the highest standards during the reviewing process. It has already established itself as the journal to which researchers send their top publications in this area." - Gitta Kutyniok, Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität München

"As interest in AI and Data Science is exploding, we are seeing a flurry of activity. Amidst these exciting results, there is a strong requirement for designing frameworks and solutions that ground the latest developments in rigorous mathematics. SIMODS is an exciting young journal that is enabling such rigor in the AI and Data Science community. The journal is run very well, with excellent review quality and turnaround time. I definitely expect it to be a key archiver and enabler of major progress in the rigorous AI and Data Science domain, and always look forward to new articles from the journal." - Prateek Jain, Google
