October 30 is Proclaimed Philadelphia STEM Equity Week

This information was shared by the Philadelphia STEM Equity Collective on October 30.

SIAM is excited to share that on October 30, Mayor James Kenney proclaimed the week of October 30 as Philadelphia STEM Equity Week, in an effort to increase the number of Black, Latinx, and women Philadelphians pursuing STEM careers by 2030.

“Philadelphia is recognized as a hub for science and technology, and therefore must ensure that our STEM talent grows equitably and reflects the diversity of its citizens,” stated Mayor Kenney in the proclamation. “Providing support to organizations and initiatives dedicated to building equity and increasing the sense of belonging for Black people, Latinx people and women is a critical step in this process.”

SIAM, headquartered in Philadelphia, strives to promote research, and advance the application of applied mathematics and computational science to engineering, industry, science, and society. Much like the City of Philadelphia, we value education, embracing diversity, and helping students access and thrive in the field of mathematical sciences.

"We are excited to witness the proclamation of Philadelphia STEM Equity Week and commend the City of Philadelphia's commitment to fostering diversity in STEM fields," said SIAM CEO Dr. Suzanne Weekes. "At SIAM, we believe that diversity and inclusion are paramount for the progress of applied mathematics and computational science, with a particular emphasis on fostering success among those from underrepresented groups in the mathematical sciences."
