Livermore Lab Foundation - SIAM 2023 Undergraduate Fellows

NOW OPEN: Applications for research opportunities at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory

The Livermore Lab Foundation (LLF) is dedicated to advancing scientific knowledge and inspiring the next generation of scientists and engineers at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory (LLNL), a U.S. Department of Energy national security laboratory. In Summer 2023, LLF is partnering with Society for Industrial and Applied Mathematics (SIAM) to support undergraduate students seeking to advance their applied mathematics skills in a world-class research facility addressing some of society's greatest scientific and technological challenges.

About the Fellowship:

(in-person, remote, & hybrid - please specify preference in your letter of interest)

Fellows will work closely - as individuals and as a cohort - with nationally recognized staff mentors on projects aligned with student interests and skills. Students with both specific and broad interests in applied mathematics, computational science and/or data science are encouraged to apply.

The fellowship award includes a paid, full-time, 10-12 week internship (compensation commensurate with the Lab’s pay structure), with an anticipated start date of late May or early June 2023. Fellows are expected to maintain regular communication with LLF and SIAM throughout the award term and remain available to serve as informal ambassadors to promote their fellowship experience. Full terms and conditions of the award will be shared with finalists during the interview process.

Selection Criteria:

  • Candidates should be an upper-level undergraduate for the 2023-24 academic year, and be in good academic standing at their home institution.
  • Candidates must be willing to provide regular updates to LLF and SIAM and to promote their fellowship experience (e.g., public speaking events, student outreach, newsletter articles, etc.).
  • Candidates with demonstrated financial need may receive special consideration.

Application Process:

  • Submit a one-page statement of interest, a resume, and a letter of recommendation from a university faculty member to [email protected].
  • Applications must be received no later than February 15, 2023 to be considered.
  • Fellowships are anticipated to be awarded mid-to-late March 2023.
