Call for Papers: SICON Special Section on Mathematical Perspectives on Control of Quantum Mechanical Systems

The SIAM Journal on Control and Optimization (SICON) is seeking submissions for a Special Section intended to be a collection of papers on mathematical perspectives on control of quantum mechanical systems. Submissions will be accepted from April 1 through July 31, 2023.

Quantum control refers to the ability to efficiently manipulate dynamical processes at the atomic or molecular scale using external electromagnetic fields (the controls). It has applications ranging from nuclear magnetic resonance and laser control of chemical reactions to quantum information science and has attracted increasing attention among quantum physicists, chemists, computer scientists, and control theorists alike. In order to control a quantum mechanical system, the classical tools from control theory need to be adapted to the specific features of the quantum world. The section will cover (but is not limited to) the following topics:

  • Controllability/optimal control of closed and open quantum systems in finite dimension.
  • Controllability of the linear and nonlinear Schroedinger equation as a PDE.
  • Geometric, adiabatic, analytic, and averaging methods for quantum control.
  • Simultaneous controllability of quantum systems.
  • Filtering, quantum feedback, measure theory.

All interested authors should submit a manuscript and cover letter in PDF format via SICON’s online submission site. Note the block labeled “Special Section” (just under the “keywords” block on your submission screen). Select “Mathematical Perspectives on Control of Quantum Mechanical Systems” from the dropdown menu.
