Honoring National Volunteer Month

April is National Volunteer Month, an occasion to celebrate the dedicated individuals who selflessly offer their time and energy to make SIAM (and the world) a better place. We would like to recognize and thank our many volunteers, whether you are a review editor for a SIAM journal, organizing conferences, advising student chapters, managing committees, writing for SIAM News, sitting on the SIAM Board of Trustees, or something else. We thank all of our volunteers for your hard work and dedication, and know SIAM would be nothing without your help!

In celebration of National Volunteer Month, SIAM will be spotlighting volunteers from our community, including Dr. Bruce Hendrickson, Dr. Robert Schreiber, and Dr. Ulrike Meier Yang.

Bruce Hendrickson, Principal Associate Director for Computing, Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory

Dr. Bruce Hendrickson has degrees in mathematics and physics from Brown University and a Ph.D. in computer science from Cornell University. After a long career at Sandia National Laboratories where Dr. Hendrickson led the Center for Computational Research and managed Sandia’s Advanced Simulation and Computing program, he came to Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory and currently is the Principal Associate Director for Computing.

Dr. Hendrickson is a highly published and cited scientist, and his research has garnered a number of international awards. His research interests include computational science, parallel algorithms, combinatorial scientific computing, linear algebra, data mining, graph algorithms, and computer architecture. He has been a SIAM member for 34 years. He was named a 2012 SIAM Fellow and currently serves on the SIAM Major Awards Committee and the SIAM Committee on Science Policy. He is an active member of the SIAM community through SIAM Activity Groups, conferences, and several committees.

Robert Schreiber, Retired, Distinguished Engineer, Cerebras Systems

Dr. Robert Schreiber is a Distinguished Engineer at Cerebras Systems Inc., where he works on architecture and programming of systems for accelerated training of deep neural networks. Dr. Schreiber’s research spans sequential and parallel algorithms for matrix computation, compiler optimization for parallel languages, and high performance computer design. Alongside Cleve Moler and Gilbert Strang, he developed the sparse matrix extension of MATLAB.  He also created the NAS CG parallel benchmark and was a designer of the High Performance Fortran language. He led the development at HP of the PICO system for synthesis of custom hardware accelerators and has helped pioneer the exploitation of photonic signaling in processors and networks.

Dr. Schreiber has been a SIAM member since 1983, was named a 2010 SIAM Fellow, and currently serves on the SIAM Fellows Selection Committee and SIAM Financial Management Committee. He is the recipient of the 2012 SIAM Activity Group in Supercomputing Career Prize and has remained an active member of the SIAM community through SIAM conferences and committees.

Ulrike Meier Yang, Mathematical Algorithms and Computing Group Leader, Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory

Dr. Ulrike Meier Yang earned a bachelor’s degree in mathematics at the Ruhr-University Bochum, Germany (1983), and her Ph.D. in computer science at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign (1995). She was a staff member in the Central Institute of Applied Mathematics at the Research Centre Jülich, Germany (1983-85), and in the Center for Supercomputing Research and Development at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign (1985-1995). She joined Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory in 1998 and currently leads the Mathematical Algorithms and Computing group in the Center for Applied Scientific Computing.

Dr. Yang has been a SIAM member for 39 years and was recently named a 2024 SIAM Fellow. She is an associate editor of the SIAM Journal on Matrix Analysis and Applications and serves on the SIAM Committee on Programs and Conferences, the SIAM Board of Trustees, the SIAM Systems Oversight Committee, and Chair of the SIAM Activity Group in Supercomputing.
