Candidate Statement:
SIAM has been my professional home for more than three decades. Over the years, I have benefited a great deal from the programs it offers, including annual meetings, sectional conferences, excellent journals, Workshop Celebrating Diversity, and the Fellows program. I have also been pleased to work within SIAM committees to find ways to improve SIAM’s programs and continue to make it the welcoming society it is. Like mathematics itself, SIAM is not static. It evolves as it finds new and better ways to support the industrial and applied mathematics community and it adjusts in response to global events. Recent changes in conference format exemplify a new reality that is likely to have long-lasting effects on the way SIAM operates. If elected to the Board of Trustees, I will work to identify opportunities to grow in directions that benefit all members while maintaining the financial health of the society.

Candidate Statement
SIAM has been my professional home from the beginning of my career in 1984. I am a member of several SIAM Activity Groups and have enjoyed interacting with colleagues at SIAM conferences. I have benefited from publishing papers in SIAM journals, which are among the highest ranked in their areas. With like-minded colleagues, I helped found the Combinatorial Scientific Computing community in the early 2000’s, and together we have organized eight SIAM Workshops on CSC. More recently, I helped form the SIAM Activity Group on Applied and Computational Discrete Algorithms (ACDA), served as its founding Chair, initiated the new SIAM Conference series on ACDA, and helped grow the activity group to 400+ members.

Through these years, I have served on six editorial boards of SIAM journals and book series, and several SIAM Committees, including the Committee on Science Policy, which meets with U.S. Congressional staffers to present SIAM’s viewpoints in shaping the U.S. science budget every year. Other committees include those that monitor the health of SIAM Activity Groups, select SIAM Fellows, review SIAM Journals, as well as one that awards the George Pólya Prize in Applied Combinatorics.

I believe that this experience of working with SIAM leadership in several roles will help me to serve SIAM as a member of the Board of Trustees, if elected to do so. I believe that I would add a global perspective, being a first-generation immigrant to the U.S., with close ties to Asia, who has also worked in Canada. The primary responsibility of the Trustees is to manage the financial affairs of SIAM well, support SIAM staff members, and ensure the long-term fiscal health of SIAM. Current challenges that SIAM faces include the impact on revenues from decreased journal subscriptions due to changes in publication models, and the subsequent rising costs of conference registration fees. The return to in-person conferences after the COVID pandemic needs to be managed well. We also need to look at how funds are being spent to ensure that SIAM’s goals are being advanced. I will work with the Board to find solutions to these enormous challenges to ensure that SIAM continues to serve all of us, especially our students who are the next generation of applied mathematicians. I will work to strengthen SIAM’s commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion, providing a welcoming and supportive environment for all who would join us.

The Society for Industrial and Applied Mathematics was formed seventy years ago to spread mathematical knowledge to those who could put mathematical theory to practical use. Today, this goal is still timely: mathematical theory is a critical tool in addressing challenges in medicine, energy, public policy decisions, representation, and resource allocation. SIAM has played, and will continue to play, a large role in promoting the development and communication of new mathematical and computational tools that can be used to solve these problems. SIAM has also been addressing issues of equity and ethics in our profession. These issues have come into crisp focus in recent years, and they require a purposeful and robust response: SIAM is in a position to provide this response.

A professional society gives us a space to interact with like-minded people and to give and get support for achieving our dreams. SIAM has always been supportive of my work, and I would be honored to serve on the SIAM Board of Trustees.

Given the enormous potential carried out by automatic learning, data science and analytics, and high-performance computing for digital twin developments—as well as a strong integration between different disciplines—applied and industrial mathematics is at a crucial point to successfully tackle the increasingly more complex challenges in several fields. SIAM will play a more and more important role in leading innovation and technology transfer at several levels. SIAM has always demonstrated the ability to adapt quickly to changes in society. I am grateful for this very important opportunity as well as for what SIAM represented throughout my career, as a strong reference and guide, and accompanying me in several different aspects of my research in CSE and UQ. At this time, if elected, I would like to further support international activities of SIAM for a stronger worldwide community in applied and industrial math, with a special attention to younger generations, as well as to strengthen industrial cooperation within the community.

My first term as a member of the SIAM Board of Trustees has been both an enjoyable and challenging experience. As an active decades long member of SIAM, I felt I knew a lot, but as a “newbie” on the Board I found that my knowledge paled in comparison to details I needed to learn about the organization and governance of SIAM. Although in-person meeting restrictions due to the pandemic did not make the learning process any easier, I have still loved the challenge. I have learned a lot and hope to continue work that I have already started.

My active membership in several SIAM Activity Groups (SIAGs) has allowed me to see how decisions made at the top affect activity groups and SIAM members in general. I have sometimes discovered that what we as Board members believe is a fiscally sound choice may appear to be a callous decision at the activity group level. It is important that SIAM leadership keep the lines of communication open so that choices that affect members are clearly explained.

Maintaining our contacts with SIAM staff, activity groups, and sections will aid in this effort. So, too, will supporting modifications to the SIAM website that better highlight important information about SIAM’s history, mission, leadership, and by-laws, and encouraging wider use of SIAM’s Engage communities. These efforts should help create better informed members having the confidence to step up to leadership positions when the opportunity arises.

Candidate Statement:
SIAM is an important society that focuses on the continued development of applied mathematical and computational research needed for solving many real-world problems. It provides many opportunities to exchange research ideas among researchers from the areas of mathematics, computational science, computer science, etc., through conferences and journals. There are a few things I would be interested to further explore, such as increasing diversity and effective virtual components in conferences.

Studies have shown that diversity of all types are positively correlated with scientific impact. The view through different perspectives thinking outside the box leads to new insights and solutions that uniform groups might miss. Increasing diversity within SIAM, whether this is based on genders, races, different countries, various career stages (from students to senior researchers), different institutions (academia, national labs, or industry) is crucial for continued generation of fresh ideas and the advancement of mathematical and computational research.

The pandemic forced us to investigate virtual conferences. While I find virtual conferences to be much less effective than in-person conferences since they cannot replace actual in-person interactions, there are potential advantages to hybrid conferences. A virtual component in a conference or workshop can allow increased participation for researchers that would otherwise be unable to attend and could potentially be a tool to grow SIAM membership, however it requires further exploration to make this truly effective.

I am certain that there are other important issues that the Board of Trustees deals with, such as finances and more. Should I be elected, I would be happy to learn more about these as well.

SIAM is at a crucial junction that could enable it to reach a much broader set of mathematicians, such as those working on more mathematical aspects of computer science, those working on several areas of machine learning, and those working on various domain sciences that make increasing use of applied mathematics. Scientists from these communities are already “applied mathematicians” by craft, yet they do not feel squarely at home within the existing activities of SIAM. This broader reach would place SIAM at a much better position to advocate the importance of applied mathematics to policy makers while simultaneously increasing revenue. However, successful expansion of SIAM’s reach requires flexibility and adaptation to the needs of those communities. I see this scenario as an inevitability and will strive to make it happen because the alternative would make SIAM increasingly reclusive.

The other issues that I feel strongly about SIAM include broadening participation of underrepresented communities in a sustainable and long-term manner, helping the junior scientists advance their careers through networking and societal recognition, and increasing international participation.

My research area of inverse problems brings together a variety of mathematical subjects and areas of applications. Therefore, I believe in the importance of employing broad areas of mathematics in order to understand the difficult problems that currently present themselves in modern day applications. In return, such a study yields new mathematics that need to be developed. SIAM, as arguably the leading international society for applied mathematics in the world, offers a unique platform to promote and facilitate this vital interaction between mathematics and applications by means of its influential peer reviewed journals and book series, as well as extremely active agenda of conferences and workshops engaging mathematicians and practitioners from around the world at different professional levels. If I am elected to serve as a member of the SIAM Council for the next term, I would devote myself to continuing the excellent work of the current leadership, in particular to advance SIAM’s mission by promoting high standards of research in mathematics and in applications as part of a diverse and inclusive community.

SIAM is recognized worldwide for its leading role in applied and industrial mathematics, distinguished by its publications and conferences. Further to the role of structuring research and funding in the U.S., SIAM has a growing international impact through its international sections, student chapters, and cooperation with similar applied mathematics organizations. Throughout my career, I have been actively involved in the governance of SBMAC (President, 2006-2010), ICIAM (Treasurer, 2010-2019), and of the Center for Math Sciences Applied to Industry (CeMEAI, 2013 to present). Based on these experiences, I intend to continue and strengthen SIAM's outreach activities and industrial commitment. This includes joint applied and industrial math activities with similar organizations outside the U.S. For instance, the SIAM Student Chapters are very attractive for outreach to doctoral students, the activity groups strengthen the research areas covered by SIAM, the international and national sections provide special opportunities for joint regional activities, and there might be a place for having special arrangements appealing to postdoctoral researchers in their early career.

Regarding publication, SIAM could become a role model and set standards that could be followed by commercial publishers, in the editorial and reviewing processes, by embracing new areas in applied industrial and math and electronic publishing, and this would also be a significant contribution of SIAM to the international community and for SIAM outreach.

It would be an honor for me to have the opportunity of serving on the SIAM Council and share my experience with industrial math at the shop floor as well as my experience in industrial/applied mathematics societies.

Candidate Statement:
It is a great honor to stand for re-election to the SIAM Council.

I joined SIAM in 2011 on the occasion of the first Conference of the SIAM Activity Group on Applied Algebraic Geometry and have participated in these meetings with different roles ever since. I was one of the four inaugural corresponding editors of SIAM Journal on Applied Algebra and Geometry until the end of 2021. I also joined the SIAM Activity Group on Life Sciences and followed their activities. But just being a member of the SIAM Council since 2021 allowed me to learn about the wide scope of SIAM activities and the many opportunities that SIAM offers supporting the professional development of members at different stages of their careers, in particular students and young members. Some initiatives are naturally aimed at members based in the U.S. and it would be good to find a way to replicate them more internationally as SIAM plays a vital role in the community of computational and applied mathematicians on an international scale. Other challenges include the role of applied mathematics in new areas, the interaction between data-driven algorithms and modeling, funding, underrepresentation, publishing, industry engagement, education and outreach, hybrid participation, etc.

If elected, I will be delighted to serve the SIAM community and contribute to the continued success and evolution of SIAM.

As the world’s largest professional association devoted to applied mathematics, SIAM not only plays an obvious role in the research and funding landscape inside the U.S. SIAM also has a major impact internationally through its international sections, student chapters, and cooperations with other applied mathematics organizations.

In particular, as (vice-)president of the German-based GAMM (International Association of Applied Mathematics and Mechanics) I have come to appreciate the cooperation with SIAM on various issues ranging from joint student chapters to cooperating on conferences. I believe that these activities strengthen the applied math community worldwide and should be continued and broadened.

Although face-to-face interactions are irreplaceable and most of us do not want to miss those, the pandemic has shown that hybrid events allow for greater reach and more participants. This opens up the possibility of organizing an event with a sustainable mindset. Attendees who want to reduce their carbon footprint have the option to participate online in a face-to-face event, they can comment, ask questions, share and like, and interact with other attendees. SIAM must find a clever way to link the two worlds together so that both on-site and virtual participants benefit from a meeting.

Due to my involvement in GAMM and ICIAM I would like to strengthen the “I” in SIAM as today it seems to be even more relevant than before to open new channels of communication between researchers and potential users of mathematical tools. With new emerging fields such as digital twins, smart materials, and recent aspects of AI, the need for more direct communication between experts from various industrial domains (including industry users and tool providers) and academia to outline and discuss mathematical challenges appears on the agenda. SIAM should try to foster this and to be more attractive for private corporations.

SIAM has been very successful with its publications program defining the highest scientific standards in the editorial and reviewing processes. This needs to be secured in the future. New elements like online reviewing and/or commenting functionality or running computational experiments reproducing the published results online may be interesting new features.

My personal ambition is to stress the 'I' in SIAM with a focus on better connecting industrial practitioners with academic scientists. Many of my past innovations in industrial applications leveraged mathematical advancements, which have simply not been known widely enough. This is partly due to an underrepresentation of industrial practitioners in SIAM, but likewise also due to limited communication of mathematical innovation outside academic communities. My ambition is to establish SIAM as a major communicator of mathematical capabilities to make a broader community as well as to involve more industrial practitioners within SIAM.

Mathematics is the fuel of our economies, e.g., in many countries 20-30% of gross value add is enabled by mathematics. And its importance is steadily growing. Mathematics is a key technology to solve some of the biggest challenges ahead of our societies. Still, its powers and opportunities are not known to a state they should be known and thus also not leveraged to their full potential. Here SIAM can play a major role.

This is an uninterrupted time of new research challenges involving computer science, biology, statistics and engineering expertise, joining efforts together with the mathematical community. In this exciting and fast changing setting, I believe SIAM should continue to testify and strengthen the role of applied mathematics in innovative application areas such as data science -- where new mathematics is being created at incredible speed -- through publications, conferences, and social media with researchers in well-established disciplines.

SIAM should also continue to be inclusive and create research and network opportunities for all mathematicians, encouraging and supporting participation.
