Virtual Annual Meeting: Gear up and Plan Your Days!

We may not be able to meet in Toronto for this year’s Joint SIAM/CAIMS Annual Meeting (AN20), but that doesn’t mean we can’t hold the meeting! SIAM and CAIMS are pivoting to virtual with a lineup of invited plenary and prize talks, minisymposia, digital posters, industry events, and more. Virtual AN20 will be happening July 6-17 and registration is free and open to all; please review the program and register now. Registration for AN20 includes SIAM Conference on Imaging Science (IS20) as well.

All sessions will be recorded and available on-demand to conference attendees through the virtual conference platform. Registration details and the virtual program are available on the AN20 website now.

Get Your Questions Answered

Please read the FAQ below to learn more about the virtual meeting and all of its nuances. If you have additional questions, please contact [email protected].

Q: I’ve been waiting to hear more about AN20/IS20! Why am I only getting information on this now

A: As you will see from SIAM’s COVID-19 response blog, SIAM staff have been confronted with the challenging task of unwinding several 2020 in-person conferences and finding alternatives to offer their content. These alternatives have included postponement, cancellation, and pivoting to virtual. In the case of AN20/IS20, our search for a virtual platform to offer a more complete conference experience has put us in conversation with a number of vendors who are simultaneously scrambling to build capacity for other societies and associations pivoting their meetings to virtual. We feel that the result of this difficult search is an attractive and functional platform that will give attendees a sense of community and connectedness in addition to delivering the outstanding program assembled by the conference co-chairs. We hope you agree.

Q: As a minisymposium organizer at AN20/IS20, I received a request from SIAM whether I would like the minisymposium to be included in the virtual program. I said yes. What now?

A: Scheduling of AN20/IS20 is happening now and will be completed soon. You will be contacted with further instructions and the ability to either choose your day/time slot or request a change to the slot you have been assigned.

Q: My contributed talk or poster was accepted for presentation at AN20/IS20. What do I do?

A: Contributed speakers and poster presenters will be offered a virtual stand in the poster hall. That stand can include a single-page poster, an extended abstract, or a video embedded from YouTube. If you intend to participate, you should prepare that file now.

Q: I would like to participate as a job-seeker in the Virtual Career Fair. What do I do?

A: The Virtual Career Fair is happening July 7 from 11 a.m. – 2 p.m. ET, and is open to SIAM members and registrants of AN20/IS20. For more information and to sign up, click here.

Q: My company would like to have a booth at the Virtual Career Fair. How do we sign up?

A: A link to the portal with a list of booth options at various price points is available here

Q: Will there be exhibitors and sponsors at AN20/IS20?

A: Yes! The joint conferences will have an exhibition hall where companies can display branding material, including movies, brochures, etc. If you or a colleague knows of a company interested in exhibiting or sponsoring AN20/IS20, learn more here, and please put them in touch with SIAM Marketing, [email protected].

Q: Will I still be able to take advantage of the conference discount on SIAM books?

A: Yes! We will be offering everyone 40% off if you buy 2 or more books. If you buy one book, you will receive a 30% discount if you are a SIAM member, or a 20% discount if you are a non-member. To use your discount, simply click on the virtual SIAM Books booth on the conference website for the discount code. Members do not need a code to purchase one book.

Q: Can I talk to SIAM Book Editors about book ideas or my current project?

A: Absolutely. Our Book Editors will be available to chat with you via video or phone as you prefer. To reach out, simply visit the virtual SIAM Books booth, or you can contact us via email –

Elizabeth Greenspan, Executive Editor – [email protected]
Paula Callaghan, Acquisitions Editor – [email protected]

Q: What is happening with the SIAM Workshop on Network Science (NS20)?

A: NS20 is running as a standalone virtual workshop July 9-10, 2020. Registration is now open via the NS20 website. Further programming information can be found here

Q: Will all virtual conferences run by SIAM be free of charge?

A: No. 2020 conferences pivoting to virtual have been offered at zero fee in recognition of the challenging circumstances we all find ourselves in with reduced access to funds, and in recognition that we’re experimenting with new formats that will take some time to feel natural. Contingency planning for 2021 conferences is already underway. All attendees of 2021 conferences, whether in-person or remote, should expect to be charged a nonzero registration fee.
