The One Nonlocal World Project

By Marta D'Elia

Nonlocal equations have become a key component in modeling phenomena that are characterized by long-range forces. The nonlocal research community is growing incredibly quickly, thanks to the successful application of nonlocal models in several scientific and engineering applications in materials science, mechanics, image processing, and turbulence, among others.

With the purpose of staying "nonlocally" connected during these unusual times, we created "One Nonlocal World" — an online tool that features updates on new nonlocal trends and events.

The One Nonlocal World project is an online platform for people who are working on nonlocal problems or interested in learning more about this topic; researchers can regularly check for updates on nonlocal modeling, analysis, and computation. The project’s short-term goal is to keep researchers connected virtually via workshops and schools during the unconventional times associated with COVID-19. The long-term goal is to build up new communication channels for a more connected and inclusive research community on nonlocal models.

Our opening event is scheduled for Friday, January 22nd through Saturday, Jan 23rd, 2021. Topics will range from fractional calculus to nonlocal calculus and address the mathematical and numerical aspects of nonlocal modeling and simulation. Confirmed plenary speakers are as follows:

  • Max Gunzburger of Florida State University (January 22nd)
  • George Karniadakis of Brown University (January 22nd)
  • Robert Lipton of Louisiana State University (January 23rd)
  • Erdogan Madenci of the University of Arizona (January 23rd)
  • Stewart Silling of Sandia National Laboratories (January 22nd)

We hope you’ll join us! On behalf of the whole One Nonlocal World committee,

  • Marta D'Elia of Sandia National Laboratories
  • Qiang Du of Columbia University
  • Petronela Radu of the University of Nebraska-Lincoln
  • Pablo Seleson of Oak Ridge National Laboratory
  • Xiaochuan Tian of the University of California, San Diego
  • Yue Yu of Lehigh University

Marta D'Elia is a staff member at Sandia National Laboratories.
