Talking BIG Jobs Live Interview is Jan. 15

The second interview of the Talking BIG Jobs Interview Series will take place January 15 and will feature Caitlin Waddle as the interviewer and guest Stephanie Fitchett, data scientist at Transamerica, as the interviewee. Participants will learn how Dr. Fitchett's background as a mathematician has informed her career and her current work. The interview will take place at the Joint Mathematics Meetings in Denver, Colorado, at 1 p.m. MST, and will be webcast live. Learn more and register for the webinar.

New SIAM Activity Group Officers

We are pleased to announce new officers for several SIAM Activity Groups (SIAGs). Officers began their terms on January 1, 2020, and most will serve through the end of 2021. Thank you to all of our outgoing SIAG officers! Learn more

The SIAM Visiting Lecture Program (VLP) is an opportunity for institutions to invite applied mathematicians and computational scientists to speak at their campuses. Conference Updates

SIAM Events at Joint Mathematics Meetings   

SIAM has organized several events taking place this week (January 15-18) at the Joint Mathematics Meetings (JMM20) in Denver, Colorado. If you're attending JMM, don't miss the SIAM Invited Address delivered by James Keener titled “The Mathematics of Life: Making Diffusion Your Friend” on Thursday, January 16, at 11:10 a.m. as well as the MAA-AMS-SIAM Gerald and Judith Porter Lecture and the MAA-SIAM-AMS Hrabowski-Gates-Tapia-McBay Lecture. There will also be several SIAM-sponsored minisymposia focusing on research and training in applied mathematics. Learn more.

AN20 Minisymposium Proposal Deadline Extended

The minisymposium proposal deadline for Second Joint SIAM/CAIMS Annual Meeting (AN20) has been extended to Monday, January 27. The deadline for contributed lecture, poster, and minisymposium presentation abstracts is February 3, and the deadline to apply for Travel Fund awards is January 20. Learn more.

2020 NSF-CBMS Conferences Announced

The six NSF-CBMS Regional Research Conferences in the Mathematical Sciences for 2020 are now set! These are a series of five-day conferences that feature a distinguished lecturer and seek to stimulate interest and activity in one sharply focused area of the mathematical sciences. Learn more.

SIAM Activity Group on Analysis of Partial Differential Equations: Award Winners and New Prize

Jacob Bedrossian and Nader Masmoudi were awarded the 2019 SIAM Activity Group on Analysis of Partial Differential Equations (SIAG/APDE) Prize for their paper, “Inviscid Damping and the Asymptotic Stability of Planar Shear Flows in the 2D Euler Equations.” Bedrossian accepted the award and presented the paper in December at the 2019 SIAM Conference on Analysis of Partial Differential Equations (PD19). Learn more.
 
A new prize, the SIAG/APDE Early Career Prize, will be awarded for the first time at the 2021 SIAM Conference on Analysis of Partial Differential Equations (PD21). Nominations for the prize open May 1, 2020. Learn more

SIAM Activity Group on Supercomputing Prizes at PP20

The SIAG/SC Early Career Prize, SIAG/SC Career Prize, and SIAG/SC Best Paper Prize will be awarded at the SIAM Conference on Parallel Processing for Scientific Computing (PP20) in Seattle, Washington. The awards will be presented and the prize recipients will give their talks on February 14, 2020. Be sure to attend if you are at PP20. Learn more.

Nick Trefethen is SIAM's 2020 John von Neumann Lecturer

Nick Trefethen, Professor of Numerical Analysis at University of Oxford, is the 2020 John von Neumann Lecturer. Trefethen will deliver this flagship lecture at the Second Joint SIAM/CAIMS Annual Meeting (AN20) in July. Learn more.
