2018 SIAM General Election: Polls Open September 11, 2018

The SIAM General Election is around the corner! We will be electing three Board of Trustees and four SIAM Council members to serve as SIAM leadership. The polls open September 11, 2018. Make your voice heard! Find our who's running. Full bios will be available later this month.

New Free Resource: Math Modeling Hub

Last month, the SIAM Conference on Applied Mathematics Education hosted the official launch of a new mathematics community - the Math Modeling Hub (MMHub). The MMHub is a website designed to support the growing community of math modeling educators across all educational levels through mentoring, resources, and community. Learn more about the features and join now.

Use AmazonSmile for Back-to-School Shopping

Back-to-school season is here! When you shop at smile.amazon.com (now and all year long), Amazon donates 0.5% of the price of your eligible purchases to SIAM, at no cost to you. Just follow this link to select "Society for Industrial and Applied Mathematics" as your charitable organization (search for our full name - no acronym). Happy shopping!

Nominate a Colleague for the 2019 Class of SIAM Fellows

Nominations for the 2019 Class of Fellows are being accepted now through October 17, 2018! Help raise the visibility of the applied math community by identifying members with demonstrated excellence in research, industrial work, educational activities, and other services related to the goals of SIAM. Members can nominate up to two individuals for distinguished work. Learn more about the SIAM Fellows Program and make your nomination now.

Give Your Opinion: Global Survey of Scientists

The International Council for Industrial and Applied Mathematics (ICIAM) is participating in conducting a survey which aims to better understand the problems mathematical, computing, and natural science academics and practitioners are facing around the world. SIAM members are encouraged to participate in this survey. One of the specific tasks for the project is to collect data across the world to inform policy makers from all countries, especially developing countries, about reducing the gap between men and women in mathematical, computing, and natural sciences. Take the survey now.

SIAM is Hiring!

SIAM is seeking a Director of Programs and Services and a Meeting Manager. The Director of Programs and Services is responsible for the oversight and management of programs and projects mostly concentrated on the society’s membership and conference programs. Learn more about this position. The Meeting Manager will be part of a small and busy conference department. Qualified candidates must possess the ability to work independently, manage multiple deadlines, learn new software quickly, and work well with others. Learn more about this position.

Lock in 2018 SIAM Membership Rates

Did you know you can join SIAM as a lifetime member and lock in your rate forever - so it never increases AND you don't have to remember to renew each year? The deal: subtract your age from 65 and multiply that number by $154 for your dues (minimum $770). Learn more, and email [email protected] to become a lifetime member.

New Books: Hot Off the Press

Computational Uncertainty Quantification for Inverse Problems
This book is an introduction to both computational inverse problems and uncertainty quantification (UQ) for inverse problems. The book also presents more advanced material on Bayesian methods and UQ, including Markov chain Monte Carlo sampling methods for UQ in inverse problems. Each chapter contains MATLAB® code that implements the algorithms and generates the figures, as well as a large number of exercises accessible to both graduate students and researchers. Learn more.

Numerical Analysis of Partial Differential Equations Using Maple and MATLAB
This book provides an elementary yet comprehensive introduction to the numerical solution of partial differential equations (PDEs). Used to model important phenomena, these equations have applications in engineering and the life sciences, and most can only be solved approximately using computers. Detailed descriptions of the four major classes of discretization methods for PDEs, self-contained convergence proofs for each method, and runnable MATLAB code for each of the discretization methods and exercises are included. What is Artificial Intelligence & How Are We Using It?

Deep learning is driving the explosion of artificial intelligence today. Deep learning—software that attempts to mimic activity in neurons in the neocortex—has greatly enhanced state-of-the-art techniques in speech recognition, natural language understanding, object detection, visual object recognition, and language translation. In this video, Yann LeCun of New York University and Facebook talks about deep learning’s impact on various disciplines ranging from artificial intelligence and imaging to biomedicine, drug discovery, and genomics. Watch the video.
