We are thrilled to announce to the community that MathWorks, the developer of MATLAB, is the new title sponsor of SIAM's Math Modeling Challenge! “We are excited to partner on the Challenge with MathWorks, whom we know well and have collaborated with in the past, and whose goals and mission are closely aligned with our own. Speakers Wanted: SIAM Visiting Lecture Program

The SIAM Education Committee has been working to relaunch and revitalize the SIAM Visiting Lecturer Program (VLP) and we need your help. The VLP functions as a valuable resource to the mathematical sciences community by presenting students, chairpersons, colloquium organizers, and undergraduate advisors with a list of applied mathematicians working in industry, government, and academia who can speak on a variety of interesting topics. Attend SIAM Sessions at the Joint Mathematics Meetings

Tamara G. Kolda is giving the SIAM Invited Talk at the Joint Mathematics Meetings (JMM) in San Diego, being held January 10-13, 2018. Read the article about her invited talk on Tensor Decomposition in the December issue of SIAM News. In addition, SIAM is sponsoring eight minisymposia at the JMM on a range of applied topics, including sessions on Data Science, Imaging Science, and Finite Element Approximation. New Book: Mathematics Curriculum for the 21st Century Student

Foundations of Applied Mathematics, Volume I: Mathematical Analysis, authored by Jeffrey Humpherys, Tyler J. Jarvis, and Emily J. Evans and published by SIAM, provides the essential foundations of both linear and nonlinear analysis necessary for understanding and working in twenty-first century applied and computational mathematics. In addition to the standard topics, the text includes several key concepts of modern applied mathematical analysis that should be, but are not typically, included in advanced undergraduate and beginning graduate mathematics curricula. As we rev up for this year's M3 Challenge, we're putting the focus on this free resource for high school level educators and students - our seven-part math modeling video series! Mathematical modeling uses math to represent, analyze, make predictions, or otherwise provide insight into real world phenomena. This episode, number five in the series, guides you through the process of finding a solution to your mathematical model. Here’s where you’ll first discover if you’ve really answered your original real world problem. It's never too early to start prepping for the 2018 Challenge - watch part 5 now.

Sneak Peak: 2018 SIAM Annual Meeting Speakers

The list is now posted! Find out who will be speaking at the 2018 SIAM Annual Meeting in July, and get a sneak peak of one highly-anticipated talk. Björn Sandstede will show how geometric dynamical systems ideas combined with PDE approaches can shed light on the stability and dynamics of spiral waves and many other patterns and nonlinear waves. Get Involved: Gene Golub SIAM Summer School

2018 Call for Applications
Applications to attend the 2018 Gene Golub SIAM Summer School are now being accepted. The 2018 G²S³ is happening June 17-30, 2018, in Breckenridge, Colorado, USA, and aims to introduce graduate students to the mathematical and computational aspects of inverse problems. Applications to attend are being accepted now through February 1.

2019 Call for Proposals
Interested in helping organize a Gene Golub SIAM Summer School? Proposals for organizing the 2019 G²S³ are also currently being accepted. Letters of intent to organize next year’s school are due January 1, 2018.

Spotlight: SIAG/APDE Prize Awarded

Congratulations go to Scott N. Armstrong and Charles K. Smart, who received the SIAG/APDE Prize on Monday, December 11, at PD17 in Baltimore, Maryland. SIAG/APDE awards the prize for an outstanding paper on a topic in PDE. Scott presented their winning paper at the conference. Learn more and see how the recipients answered our questions about their research.
