10 Things You Can’t Miss at AN17

SIAM Annual Meeting (AN17) is just a month away, so let the countdown commence! Check out the top 10 things you cannot miss at the meeting – brought to you from your very own SIAM staff. We look forward to seeing you in Pittsburgh in less than one month!

  1. Get a sneak peek! SIAM is in the process of upgrading our Conference Management System to a new platform, and developing a new website to replace siam.org. Samples of these new platforms will be displayed at AN17, plus we’ll be rallying folks to do some attendee testing too! Stop by the registration booth onsite for more information.

  2. Meet new friends from around the world at the Student Orientation – right before the Welcome Reception Sunday night! Learn more about all the student activities in store for this Annual Meeting!  

  3. Find out the latest funding news from those in Washington. In the minisymposium happening July 13 - How Changing Implementations of National Priorities Might Affect Mathematical Funding - a panel of representatives from funding agencies will share the current situation and discuss future opportunities. 

  4. Meet real-life “hidden figure” Christine Darden, one of the human computers featured in the book Hidden Figures, along with other women working in mathematics today, who will share their personal insights on encouraging diversity in the field. The panel is July 11 and conducted in partnership with AWM, EDGE, IBM, and NAM. Learn more.

  5. DEALS! The SIAM booth will offer buy two or more books, get 40% off list price PLUS a free t-shirt!

  6. Stop by the Career Fair July 10 to learn about careers in business, industry, and government. Job seekers are requested to submit resumes to [email protected] in advance. Learn more about resume prep and check out the growing list of employers participating.

  7. Find out what’s happening at SIAM headquarters and don’t miss the opportunity to network with other SIAM members and recognize the 2017 SIAM Fellows – all happening at the Business Meeting - July 11, 6:15-7pm, Spirit of Pittsburgh A - 3rd Floor.

  8. This year’s I.E. Block Community Lecture – which is open to the public - will be given by Emily Shuckburgh, British Antarctic Survey, UK. Learn more about Emily’s research on climate change and how mathematicians can contribute to the issue and more. The lecture is happening July 12 at 6:15pm and will be followed by a reception. 

  9. Stop by the Communication Doctors booth Monday July, 10th and chat with representing mathematicians, science communicators, and educators about how to turn your complex research into a story that appeals to the public.  

  10. Finally, don’t forget to follow and use the #SIAMAN17 hashtag on social media to share your photos and AN17 experiences!
