James Yorke (University of Maryland, College Park) announced the Red Sock Award at last week's 2017 SIAM Conference on Applications of Dynamical Systems, which was held in Snowbird, Utah. The esteemed award is traditionally presented to four students and/or postdocs by the SIAM Activity Group on Dynamical Systems for the best poster presentation at the biennial dynamical systems conference; posters are judged anonymously by a prize committee during the two evenings of poster presentations. This year, five students received the award. Yorke donned an all-red ensemble for the occasion, and awarded the recipients with a $100.00 monetary gift and—of course—a pair of red socks. The winners are as follows:

  • Genevieve Jay Brett (Massachusetts Institute of Technology): Chaotic Advection in the Alboran Sea: Lagrangian Analysis of Transport Processes in and Out of the Western Alboran Gyre
  • Ian McGahan (Utah State University): 28 Models Later: Best Practices for Modeling the Zombie Apocalypse with Real Data
  • Stephanie Dodson (Brown University): Spectral Properties of Spiral Waves in the Barkley Model
  • Vicky Chuqiao Yang (Northwestern University): Political Elections and Third Parties: A Mathematical Model and Empirical Evidence
  • Isaac Yeaton (Virginia Tech): Stability Properties of Flying Snakes During Transient Glides

Congratulations on a job well done!
