Submit a Video to Become a SIAM-AMS Student Media Fellow
SIAM, in collaboration with the American Mathematical Society (AMS) and with generous financial support from Philippe and Claire-Lise Tondeur, is embarking on an exciting new project aimed at graduate students - the SIAM-AMS Student Media Fellows Program. As fellows, students will conduct live interviews with established mathematicians working outside academia. The interviews will be hosted as live webinars and then recorded and uploaded to YouTube. Selected candidates will receive training from Philadelphia’s public media station, WHYY. The application deadline is September 30, 2019. Click here to apply and for more information, or contact Richard Moore, SIAM’s Director of Programs and Services.

SIAM President Forms Two New Ad Hoc Committees
SIAM President Lisa Fauci has formed two ad hoc committees to look at two major issues for SIAM's future. The first is an ad hoc committee on ethics. This committee was created to address issues related to ethics, including, but not limited to, sexual harassment. The committee’s charge will be to review and recommend policies and procedures stemming from the Societies Consortium on Sexual Harassment. SIAM is a member of the Consortium, along with more than 100 other professional societies. The Consortium will provide research, evidence-based resources, and legal guidance to societies as they adopt policies and procedures to address sexual harassment. The ethics committee will also address policies and procedures for a wide range of ethical issues. The second ad hoc committee has been formed to address SIAM’s role in the Joint Math Meetings (JMM). The JMM will be undergoing a restructuring after 2021. This presents an opportunity for SIAM to define its role and explore ways in which its presence at JMM can benefit the members of SIAM and its activity groups. The ad hoc committees will come up with recommendations that will be presented to the Council and Board for their decision.

Nominations for the 2020 Class of Fellows are being accepted now through October 16. Help raise the visibility of the applied math community by making a nomination. Members can nominate up to two individuals for distinguished work. Learn more about the SIAM Fellows Program and make your nomination now.
Invite a Visiting Lecturer to Speak at Your Institution
The SIAM Visiting Lecturer Program (VLP) provides an opportunity for institutions to invite inspirational applied mathematicians and computational scientists to speak at their campuses. For the month of September, we are featuring VLP speakers Aaron Arnoldsen (Global Demand & Supply Management Technology Director at Nike), Marylesa Howard (Supervisor II at Nevada National Security Site), Gary Green (The Aerospace Corporation retiree), and Lois Curfman McInnes (Senior Computational Scientist at Argonne National Laboratory). Learn more about and contact these speakers.
Your Demographic Data
SIAM is dedicated to the equality of opportunity and treatment for all participants regardless of gender, gender identity or expression, sexual orientation, race, color, national or ethnic origin, religion or religious belief, age, marital status, disabilities, veteran status, or field of expertise. SIAM is committed to promoting diversity in its activities, leadership, and recognition of excellence. As you complete your renewal, you will be asked to update your membership profile with your demographic information to help us determine whether we are adequately meeting this goal and to identify areas of under-representation.
Your personal and demographic information will be protected. Aggregated demographic data on our members will allow SIAM to assess its progress in supporting the entire community of applied and computational mathematics. In addition, demographic data of individual members will only be shared with certain committees (e.g. Committee on Committees and Appointments, Fellows Selection Committee, etc.) on a need to know basis in consultation with SIAM leadership, as SIAM seeks to meet its goals in diversity and representation.
SIAM Adds New Reciprocal Membership Organizations
SIAM has new reciprocal membership relationships with two applied mathematics associations. Members of Unione Matematica Italiana in Italy and National Association of Mathematicians in the United States may now join SIAM at a discounted price. Contact SIAM Membership with any questions.
SIAM News and SIAM Review Go Green
To help reduce SIAM’s carbon footprint and reduce costs, SIAM members will now be able to modify the delivery options for their SIAM News and SIAM Review (SIREV) subscriptions, starting with this fall’s membership renewal cycle. Individuals can also change their delivery options on their online profiles.
Free student members will need to opt in to continue receiving print issues of SIAM News. All issues of SIAM News are freely available online and table of contents notifications are emailed to all SIAM members and individuals subscribed to SIAM News alerts.
SIAM members who currently receive a paper copy of SIREV will have the option to opt out of receiving print copies, but will retain access to the online version, which is freely available to all members.
