Career Fair

Seeking Suggestions: How Can We Expand SIAM Career Fairs?

We’ve been putting on career fairs at many meetings for 15+ years, and are looking for YOUR suggestions on how to expand and make them better. These events are geared towards students and professionals looking for information about careers in industry or national labs and are a great learning and networking opportunity. Tell us what and who you would like to see at the next SIAM Career Fair. Thank you in advance!

Vote in SIAM's General Election - Polls Open September 12

This fall, SIAM members will elect a President-Elect, Vice President-at-Large, and Secretary, as well as three members to serve on the SIAM Board of Trustees, and four members to serve on the SIAM Council. Make your voice heard and help determine who will make important decisions for the organization — by voting! Look out for the email announcing elections September 12th to cast your vote. Learn more about the election.

Congrats SIAM-AAAS Mass Media Fellow Jesse Dunietz

Each year, SIAM is proud to sponsor a student in applied mathematics and computational science to participate in the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS) Mass Media Science and Engineering Fellows Program. This year, we sponsored Jesse Dunietz, who is now nearing the end of his fellowship. During his experience, Jesse wrote news stories on raven intelligence and particle physics, and even attended a racing event and wrote a report about a self-driving race car! Congrats on a successful fellowship, Jesse. Learn more.

Nominate a Colleague for the 2018 Class of SIAM Fellows

Nominations for the 2018 Class of Fellows are being accepted now through November 6th! Help raise the visibility of the applied math community by identifying members with demonstrated excellence in research, industrial work, educational activities, and other services related to the goals of SIAM. Members can nominate up to two individuals for distinguished work. Fellows will be announced in March and recognized at the 2018 Annual Meeting in Portland, OR. Learn more about the SIAM Fellows Program and make your nomination now.

Upcoming Activity Group Elections: What You Need to Know

We are proud to have 6 Activity Groups (SIAGs) that have renewed their 2018 charters, and 7 which are holding new officer elections this fall. The Activity Groups with elections this year are:

AG  (Algebraic Geometry)
CST  (Control and Systems Theory)
DM  (Discrete Mathematics)
DMA  (Data Mining and Analytics)
DS  (Dynamical Systems)
IS  (Imaging Science)
SC  (Supercomputing)

Remember – your voice is important! If you are a member of one of the SIAGs listed above, please keep an eye on your inbox for more information on who is running for office and how to vote. The results will be released January 1, 2018.

Credit Scoring and Its Applications

Hot Off the Press: Credit Scoring and Its Applications, Second Edition

Lyn Thomas, Jonathan Crook, and David Edelman

This book is recognized as the bible of credit scoring. It contains a comprehensive review of the objectives, methods, and practical implementation of credit and behavioral scoring. The authors review principles of the statistical and operations research methods used in building scorecards, as well as the advantages and disadvantages of each approach. The book contains a description of practical problems encountered in building, using, and monitoring scorecards and examines some of the country-specific issues in bankruptcy, equal opportunities, and privacy legislation. It contains a discussion of economic theories of consumers' use of credit, and readers will gain an understanding of what lending institutions seek to achieve by using credit scoring and the changes in their objectives. Learn more.
