Invite a Visiting Lecturer to Speak at Your Institution

The SIAM Visiting Lecturer Program (#SIAMVLP) provides an opportunity for institutions to invite inspirational applied mathematicians and computational scientists to speak at their campuses. For the month of October, we are featuring VLP speakers Sara Del Valle (Deputy Group Leader/Scientist at Los Alamos National Laboratory), Edgar Duéñez-Guzmán (Senior Research Engineer at DeepMind), Natalie Durgin (Senior Data Scientist at Spiceworks), and Berton Earnshaw (Vice President of Data Science at Recursion Pharmaceuticals). Learn more about and contact these speakers.

Today is the Deadline to Apply for 2019 SIAM-AMS Student Media Fellows

Are you a grad student who is passionate about an industry career and has a talent for connecting with people both in person and through online media? Don't miss this opportunity to apply for the SIAM-AMS Student Media Fellows Program. The deadline for submitting a video has been extended to October 14. Submit your video and application here, and any questions should be directed to SIAM’s Director of Programs and Services at [email protected].

2020 NSF GRFP Applications due October 25

Applications for mathematical sciences topics for the 2020 NSF Graduate Research Fellowship Program (GRFP) are due October 25, 2019. The program provides up to three years of graduate education support, including an annual $34,000 stipend. Interested students can learn more and submit their application at the applicant information page.

Early Career Researchers: Apply for a SIAM Science Policy Fellowship

SIAM is accepting applications for the Science Policy Fellowship Program, open to all early career researchers currently working in the U.S. This program was created to enable post-doctoral fellows and early career researchers to be strong advocates for federal investments in applied mathematics and computational science. Benefits of this fellowship include receiving in-person and remote training; attending biannual SIAM Committee on Science Policy meetings in Washington, D.C.; working with federal officials; and participating in an advocacy day on Capitol Hill. The application deadline is November 25, 2019. Learn more and apply for the fellowship.

2019 SIAM General Election: Polls Close November 12

Polls are open for the SIAM elections for President-Elect, Vice President-at-Large, Secretary, and Board of Trustees and Council. Take a few minutes to read the candidate profiles and statements, and check your inbox for voting instructions. Questions? Email [email protected].

Announcing the JPBM Communications Award Recipients

Congratulations to Christopher Budd and James Tanton who were just announced as recipients of the 2020 Joint Policy Board for Mathematics (JPBM) Communications Award, a collaborative recognition from SIAM, American Mathematical Society, The American Statistical Association, and Mathematical Association of America. The ceremony will take place in January at the 2020 Joint Mathematics Meeting in Denver, Colorado. Whether you’re just entering the workforce, taking the next step in your career, or looking for talent to propel your business, the SIAM Job Board is the place for you! The SIAM Job Board offers job seekers and employers an easy way to connect via up-to-date listings in the mathematical and computational sciences.

Holly Smith works in human resources at Siemens Digital Industries Software and she recently had an extremely challenging and specific job requirement. Concerned that she wouldn’t find the right person, she turned to SIAM. “We used the SIAM job posting and the targeted mass email and it was extremely effective. Now, whenever I have open positions that I think can benefit from this, I always recommend this to the hiring managers that I work with. SIAM continues to be a go-to resource for Siemens PLM Software/Siemens Digital Industries Software.”

Conference Updates

Changes to SIAM’s Child Care Grant Formula

Since their introduction in 2012, SIAM child care grants have been helping parents balance their professional and family lives. Child care services, caregiver travel, and other conference-related expenses incurred in the care of dependent children are eligible for reimbursement if they result directly from the parent’s participation in the conference, regardless of whether care is provided at the conference site or at home. Starting in 2020, SIAM is changing the grant amount to $85 per family per conference day (from $250 total per conference) to better align with a 2018 study conducted by the Careers Department of Science Magazine. Look for the application portal on each conference website under “Lodging & Support.” Learn more about child care grants at SIAM conferences

SIAM Conferences Getting Greener in 2020

Implementation of the SIAM Board's December 2018 decision to discontinue printing of full conference programs will begin with all 2020 conferences. The Program-at-a-Glance will still be made available in print and attendees will still be able to use the continuously-updated online program and, when available, the mobile app.

Minitutorial Proposals Wanted for CSE21

SIAM is seeking proposals for minitutorials at the SIAM Conference on Computational Science and Engineering (CSE21), March 1-5, 2021, in Fort Worth, Texas, U.S. SIAM CSE draws thousands of attendees from academia, industry, and research laboratories. The minitutorial format allows experts to provide hands-on training in exciting new projects and topics. Learn more about the CSE21 call for minitutorials, including examples of previous CSE minitutorials and details on travel support, or submit your proposal here. Questions may be directed to Richard Moore, SIAM Director of Programs and Services.
