#GivingTuesday

Join SIAM on Nov. 27 to Celebrate #GivingTuesday!

Save the date! #GivingTuesday is November 27th. We're proud to be a part of the global celebration of giving here at SIAM. We are immensely thankful for each and every donation to our cause of promoting applied mathematics and computational science. Learn more about donating to SIAM and supporting our mission, or choose another organization that is important to you to give to. Check out givingtuesday.org to find out more about this international day of giving!

Early Career Researchers - Apply for a SIAM Science Policy Fellowship

SIAM is now accepting applications for the Science Policy Fellowship Program, open to all early career researchers currently working in the U.S. This program was created to enable post-doctoral fellows and early career researchers to be strong advocates for federal investments in applied mathematics and computational science. Benefits of this fellowship include receiving in-person and remote training; attending biannual SIAM Committee on Science Policy Meetings in Washington, DC; working with federal officials; and participating in an advocacy day on Capitol Hill. The application deadline is December 7, 2018. Learn more and apply for the fellowship.

Registration Opens for M3 Challenge

MathWorks Math Modeling (M3) Challenge aims to make math relatable and to demonstrate its importance and value in solving complex issues. Organized by SIAM and sponsored by MathWorks, M3 Challenge is an online contest that has drawn the participation of more than 41,000 students (one third female), 4,000+ high schools, 5,000+ math teachers, and 400+ Ph.D.-level judges, and has awarded more than $1.3 million in scholarships since its launch in 2006. Registration is open for the 2019 Challenge. Refer high school students and teachers here to learn more.

2018 SIAM General Election – Polls Close Tomorrow

The 2018 SIAM General Election closes tomorrow - November 13 - at 11:59pm EST! We have a strong slate of candidates and need your voice to select our future leaders. If you have questions or have not received your electronic ballot (via email), please contact the SIAM Election Manager. Your vote counts – vote today!

Hidden Figures Author Margot Lee Shetterly to Receive 2019 JPBM Communications Award

Margot Lee Shetterly will receive the 2019 Joint Policy Board for Mathematics (JPBM) Communications Award for her book and subsequent movie Hidden Figures, which opened science and mathematics to a new generation of women and people of color by bringing into light the stories of the African-American women who made significant contributions to aeronautics and astronautics, and, ultimately, to America's victory in the space race. Applications Open for AAAS Mass Media Fellowship

Each summer, SIAM supports a Mass Media Fellow to spend 10 weeks as a science reporter in the newsroom at places like National GeographicWashington Post, and Scientific AmericanApplications for the 2019 AAAS Mass Media Science & Engineering Fellows Program are officially open! Learn more and apply for this life changing (and paid!) internship.

Hot Off the Press: New SIAM Book

Frequency Domain Techniques
This book presents new computational tools for the H∞ control of distributed parameter systems in which transfer functions are considered as input-output descriptions for the plants to be controlled. The emphasis is on the computation of the controller parameters and reliable implementation. The authors present recent studies and detailed examples and discuss reliable implementation of the controller, complemented by a software based on MATLAB®. Learn more.
