M3 Challenge: NJ Team Wins Top Spot for Best Solution to Control Spread of Substance Abuse

A group of New Jersey 11th and 12th graders were selected among thousands of high school students across America as the winners of MathWorks Math Modeling Challenge, the high school competition SIAM organizes. The team of five from High Technology High School took home the top prize of $20,000 in college scholarships during the final event in New York City on Monday, April 29. Read more about the Final Event, watch the short sizzler video, and check out photos.

New: SIAM Activity Group on Applied and Computational Discrete Algorithms

Did you know - SIAM recently created the SIAM Activity Group on Applied and Computational Discrete Algorithms. This activity group fosters research on the computational solution of combinatorial problems in areas including combinatorial scientific computing, algorithmic computer science, algorithm engineering, algorithmic differentiation, combinatorial optimization, and emerging applications. Hear from the activity group chair, Alex Pothen, about the new group's goals, upcoming activities, and more! Read more.

Seeking Your Feedback on SIAM Website

In June 2018, SIAM redesigned our main website - www.siam.org. Now that you have had a chance to use the updated website, we’re asking that you answer a selection of questions so that we can get a sense how the new site is working for you. This survey is intended to drive future improvements we make to the website. Please visit www.siam.org and then take this five minute survey to let us know about your experience. We thank you in advance for helping drive future direction of the site. Take the short survey now.

SIAM Pacific Northwest Section Online Seminar Series

SIAM Pacific Northwest (SIAM PNW) Section - the section with one of the largest geographic spreads, serving the Pacific Northwest region of the U.S. and Canada - has organized an online seminar to bring all of their members together -- virtually! The seminar was virtually attended by graduate students and faculty from academic institutions, and professionals from laboratories and industry. What a cool idea! Learn more.

Update from the SIAM Committee of Science Policy

SIAM’s Committee on Science Policy (CSP) met in March. The Committee heard from several speakers, including Juan Meza (NSF/DMS), Barbara Helland (DOE/ASCR), Steve Lee (DOE/Applied Math),Valerie Browning (DARPA/DSO), Lynne Parker (OSTP/Assistant Director for AI), and Grace Peng, Director (NIH/NIBIB, Mathematical Modeling, Simulation and Analysis). Among the items of potential interest is a summary of upcoming funding opportunities in the DOE Office of Science; this summary is provided by Lewis-Burke Associates for SIAM, based on the presentations at the CSP meeting and presentations at the DOE/ASCR Advisory Committee. Read more.

SIAM Signs Letter Requesting Increased Funding for NSF

We have joined the Coalition for National Science Funding (CNSF) in requesting increased federal investment for fundamental scientific and educational programs supported by the National Science Foundation (NSF). In a letter to House and Senate appropriators, of which SIAM was a signatory, CNSF encouraged congressional leaders to reach a bi-partisan agreement to raise the budget caps on non-discretionary spending and increase funding for NSF to $9 billion for fiscal year 2020. Read the letter.

Welcoming New Marketing Communications Assistant

Please join us in welcoming the newest member of the Marketing team - part time Marketing Communications Assistant Jade Daniels! Get to know Jade - read her Q&A!

Math in Our Lives Series: SIAM/ASA Journal on Uncertainty Quantification

How can math affect disease spread, climate projections, and space? These are topics of recent SIAM journal articles, and addressed in our NEW video series - Math in our Lives! We'll be releasing one video each month through July 2019. Watch this video to find out how sensitivity analysis can help us figure out where and how a disease will spread over a global region, how statistical methods can consolidate international climate data and provide more certainty, and how probability density functions help us track orbits of astronomical objects, preventing them from intersecting with Earth's orbit. Stay tuned for more series videos! Learn more about SIAM/ASA Journal on Uncertainty Quantification (JUQ) and watch the video.

Conference Updates

Looking Forward to DS19 & NS19

Less than two weeks to go until the 2019 SIAM Conference on Applications of Dynamical Systems (May 19-23) and the co-located SIAM Workshop on Network Science (May 22-23)! Don’t miss the invited talks, including Tadashi Tokieda, Bjorn Sandstede, and Shlomo Havlin, or the Juergen Moser Lecture delivered by Philip Holmes. If you’re just starting your career, building your network, or thinking of making a change, check out the icebreaker and mentoring sessions. Did you miss the pre-registration deadline?  You can still register onsite, and don’t forget that attendance at NS19 is included if you register for DS19.

FM19 on the Horizon

The 2019 SIAM Conference on Financial Mathematics & Engineering will be held at the University of Toronto, June 4-7, with an exciting lineup of eight invited talks, 48 minisymposia, and 27 contributed paper sessions, as well as minitutorials, panel discussions, and a poster session. Don’t miss the panel on AI and Fin Tech! Registration is available onsite.
