SIAM Hosts M3 Challenge Finalist Teams with MathWorks Co-founder Cleve Moler at Final Event
MathWorks Math Modeling (M3) Challenge saw its six finalist teams in New York City on April 30 to present their mathematical models on food insecurity, and to claim top prizes. MATLAB founder and past SIAM president Cleve Moler served on the judge panel and noted that this contest sits at the intersection of two of his life’s great passions – SIAM and MathWorks. 2018 Registration Now Open: AN/MS/ED/NS
Registration is now open for SIAM Annual Meeting (AN18), being held jointly with the SIAM Conference on Mathematical Aspects of Materials Science (MS18), the SIAM Conference on Applied Mathematics Education (ED18) and the SIAM Workshop on Network Science (NS18). Learn more and register.

Collaborations: University of Bath SIAM-IMA Chapter to Host National Student Conference
Love to see collaboration between SIAM Sections and Chapters! The University of Bath SIAM-IMA Chapter is hosting the 7th annual SIAM-UKIE National Student Chapter Conference from June 18-19. The conference is expected to be one of the biggest student conferences in mathematical sciences this year in the UK, with 100+ students attending each day. Deadline for registration has been extended to May 31. Learn more.
Tensor Decomposition: A Mathematical Tool for Data Analysis
At the Joint Mathematics Meetings in January, Tammy Kolda, editor-in-chief of our new SIAM Journal on Mathematics of Data Science (SIMODS), gave a talk on tensor decomposition and how these multiway arrays can be used as powerful tools for data analysis. In this talk, Tammy demonstrated the wide-ranging utility of the canonical polyadic (CP) tensor decomposition with examples in neuroscience and chemical detection. Watch a video of the talk now.

SIAM is a Member of ORCID
Some 2,400 authors have tied their work published in SIAM journals to ORCID, a central registry of researchers. This results in an icon taking interested readers from a SIAM article to an author’s ORCID account, which displays work – in SIAM publications and elsewhere – and professional activities, as designated by the researcher. To sign up, authors can follow the “Create/link an Open Researcher Contributor ID (ORCID)” link that appears at manuscript submission. SIAM encourages taking advantage of this capability. Learn more, or contact [email protected].

SIAM Journal on Mathematics of Data Science Has Arrived
Data science - what's under the hood? This animation, from SIAM Journal on Mathematics of Data Science (SIMODS), explains that data science really is EVERYWHERE! SIMODS publishes work that advances mathematical, statistical, and computational methods in the context of data and information sciences. We invite papers that present significant advances in this context, including applications to science, engineering, business, and medicine. Make your submission and watch the video now.

Conference Updates |
The I.E. Block Community Lecture - Past and Present
As we mentioned in last month's Unwrapped, we're excited to host Thomas Hales, Mellon Professor of Mathematics at the University of Pittsburgh, as our next Block lecturer at 2018 Annual Meeting in Portland, Oregon. Curious about past lecturers? Emily Shuckburgh of the British Antarctic Survey delivered the I. E. Block Community Lecture at the 2017 SIAM Annual Meeting in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. Her lecture, “From Flatland to Our Land: A Mathematician’s Journey through Our Changing Planet,” addressed techniques from diverse branches of mathematics to unravel the workings of the climate. Learn more about last year's Block Lecture, and get excited for 2018!
Presentations from SIAM Conference on Uncertainty Quantification Now Available
Weren't able to attend the SIAM Conference on Uncertainty Quantification (UQ18) last month? That's OK! Presentations from select sessions are now available.
View and listen to invited lectures including the presentation by Merlise A. Clyde, Model Uncertainty and Uncertainty Quantification, as well as the minitutorial Approximate Bayesian Computation, presented by David Nott. Select minisymposia are also available for viewing. View all captured sessions.
Participate in AN18 Career Fair
The Career Fair is an interactive event at which SIAM Annual Meeting attendees can speak with employers about working in various industries. It’s a great opportunity to meet government and industry representatives to discuss what they look for in candidates and what each employer has to offer. Attendees should submit a resume to SIAM, so it can be provided in advance to the participating employers. Added bonus, this year we'll once again be hosting "communication doctors" during the afternoon fair; stop by to chat with representing mathematicians, science communicators, and educators about how to turn your complex research into a story that appeals to the public. Read more about the career fair and resume submission.
