MATH IN THE NEWS

FROM SIAM HQ

Applied Math, Student Chapter Conference Highlights Research

Our UC Merced student chapter hosted the Central Valley Regional SIAM Student Chapter Conference last month! In only its second year, the conference attracted 85 participants from universities around Northern and Central California, who discussed their work with colleagues and collaborators. This student-led chapter has been instrumental in providing opportunities for students to network with peers, postdocs, and professors who share a common interest in applied mathematics and related disciplines. Stay Connected with SIAM News

The online version of SIAM News consolidates all SIAM content channels, bringing you articles from print, plus online-exclusive blog posts, important announcements, concise updates on cutting-edge research, and articles on new discoveries and applications. Stay on the pulse - sign up to receive alerts when the latest issue of SIAM News posts online. And don’t forget you can submit your own articles for consideration too, just by emailing [email protected]. Learn more.

New Resources: Math Matters, Apply It! Flyers Now Available

Winning submissions by SIAM student members to the Math Matters, Apply It! campaign are being added to our website as they’re created, and the first round is now available for download. Learn more about the mathematics in everyday life and share these flyers. Thank you to Izabel Aguiar and Jessica Deters from the Colorado School of Mines for editing this year’s submissions.

M3 Challenge: Illinois Students Named National Champs

Participation in our favorite high school math modeling competition added up to a first-place finish for five students from Lincolnshire, Illinois! The group of 11th graders from Adlai E. Stevenson High School took home the top prize of $20,000 in college scholarships in Moody’s Mega Math (M3) Challenge during the Final Event on April 24, held at Moody’s Corporation headquarters in New York City. PUBLISHING NEWS & NOTES

Hot Off the Press: Four New Books

Iterative Solution of Symmetric Quasi-Definite Linear Systems
Dominique Orban and Mario Arioli

This book discusses the connection between quasi-definite systems and linear least-squares problems, the most common and best understood problems in applied mathematics, and explains how quasi-definite systems can be solved using tailored iterative methods for linear least squares (with half as much work!). To encourage researchers and students to use the software, it is provided in MATLAB, Python, and Julia. Learn more.

Advances and Trends in Optimization with Engineering Applications
Edited by Tamás Terlaky, Miguel F. Anjos, and Shabbir Ahmed

In recent years, the theory and methodology of optimization have seen revolutionary improvements. Moreover, the exponential growth in computational power, along with the availability of multicore computing with virtually unlimited memory and storage capacity, has fundamentally changed what engineers can do to optimize their designs. This book reviews 10 major areas of optimization and related engineering applications in a distinct part, providing a broad summary of state-of-the-art optimization techniques most important to engineering practice. Each part provides a clear overview of a specific area, followed by chapters detailing applications to a wide range of real-world problems. Learn more.

Analysis of Hydrodynamic Models
Peter Constantin

Analysis of Hydrodynamic Models presents a concise treatment of a number of partial differential equations of hydrodynamic origin, including the incompressible Euler equations, SQG, Boussinesq, incompressible porous medium, and Oldroyd-B. The author’s approach is based on properties of the particle trajectory maps and on analysis of the back-and-forth passage between the Lagrangian and the Eulerian descriptions. This concise, unified approach brings readers up to date on current open problems. Learn more.

Tensor Analysis: Spectral Theory and Special Tensors
Liqun Qi and Ziyan Luo

Tensors, or hypermatrices, are multi-arrays with more than two indices. In the last decade or so, many concepts and results in matrix theory—some of which are nontrivial—have been extended to tensors and have a wide range of applications (for example, spectral hypergraph theory, higher order Markov chains, polynomial optimization, magnetic resonance imaging, automatic control, and quantum entanglement problems). The authors provide a comprehensive discussion of this new theory of tensors. Learn more.

Using Algebra and Geometry in the Real World

The past decade has seen an explosion of applications of algebra, geometry, and topology to the real world, like their use in creating the computer vision that will merge tomorrow’s vehicles onto freeways themselves. That’s why this year we launched a brand new publication – the SIAM Journal on Applied Algebra and Geometry, which will showcase world-class researchers and their groundbreaking work in this growing field. Learn more about this changing area and journal in this short video! Watch it.
