SIAM Unwrapped – May 2016

Dear SIAM members,

It’s been a busy month! In April, while celebrating Mathematics Awareness Month, SIAM crowned our 2016 Moody’s Mega Math Challenge champ team (who took home $20K in scholarships out of the total $150K given away!), opened 15+ calls for nominations for SIAM prizes and awards, and much more.

Happy reading,
Becky Kerner

MATH IN THE NEWS

FROM SIAM HQ

From SIAM Leadership: A Closer Look at Activity Groups

In many ways, SIAM activity groups (SIAGs) are the heart of our organization, allowing members an opportunity to network and share information with colleagues who have similar research interests. SIAM Executive Director Jim Crowley and President Pam Cook offer an overview of these important groups, including how they form, operate and more. Learn more and read the article.

M3 Challenge 2016 Champ Teams Named, Read Top Solution Papers

At the recent Moody’s Mega Math Challenge Final Event in NYC, the top six teams presented their solutions for issues facing the future of mobility, vying for a piece of $150,000 in scholarship funds. Saint John’s School in Houston, TX, was named as the 2016 Challenge winning team for coming up with the soundest mathematical solution to how and where car-sharing companies can flourish in a rapidly-shifting automotive landscape. Read the top-ranking solutions and learn more about the day’s events!

Download and Read: GAIMME – Guidelines for Assessment & Instruction in Mathematical Modeling Education

Mathematical modeling can be taught at every stage of a student’s mathematical education, from kindergarten to undergraduate school and beyond, as a basis for developing problem-solving skills and mathematical habits of mind. That’s the premise of the national Guidelines for Assessment and Instruction in Mathematical Modeling Education (GAIMME), a new report co-published by SIAM and the Consortium for Mathematics and its Applications (COMAP) and in cooperation with the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics. Learn more as Rachel Levy discusses the free new report in the May issue of SIAM News.

SIAM ANNUAL MEETING 2016

AN16 will be held July 11-15, 2016 in Boston, MA, in parallel with our Life Sciences meeting (LS16) and the Workshop on Network Science (NS16). Will you join us? Get all the details on AN16.

Participate in Student Days & Career Fair

Student Days at the 2016 SIAM Annual Meeting will feature opportunities for students to meet with peers and professionals in the field, including a student orientation, career fair, information session on hot job and research areas, and an informal meet-and-greet for students to chat with select invited speakers. Technical sessions will include presentations by student chapter representatives and undergraduate researchers. View complete details.

And don’t forget about the Career Fair happening on July 11! Job seekers should submit resumes to SIAM by July 1 so they can be provided to participating employers in advance. Find complete resume preparation and more information on the Career Fair.

FEATURED VIDEO

Fields of Dreams – Modeling & Analysis of Large Scale Activity in the Brain

Bard Ermentrout, University of Pittsburgh, presented a talk entitled Fields of Dreams: Modeling and Analysis of Large Scale Activity in the Brain at last year’s SIAM Conference on Applications of Dynamical Systems (DS15). With the advent of optogenetics and the ability to record large numbers of neurons with high temporal resolution, there is interest in both the temporal and spatial activity of neurons in the brain. Bard discusses the role of noise on spatio-temporal activity, the interaction between extrinsic and intrinsic activity, interactions between multiple spatial networks, and recent applications of Filippov theory to discontinuous neural field models. Watch this talk and other presentations from SIAM meetings.
