MATH IN THE NEWS

FROM SIAM HQ

April is Math Awareness Month!

The 2016 theme for Math Awareness Month is the Future of Prediction. This is the time of year when people throughout the country, and even the world, learn about the importance of the mathematical sciences on society, and that math plays a vital part in everyday life. Help spread the world. Learn more and download the poster at www.mathaware.org/mam/2016/.

New Class of SIAM Fellows Coming Soon

Thank you for sending us YOUR nominations for the newest class of SIAM Fellows! Each year, the SIAM Fellows Program helps raise the visibility of the mathematical sciences by honoring outstanding individuals in the field based on distinguished research contributions and service to the community.

The 2016 Class of SIAM Fellows will be announced on March 31 and recognized at the 2016 SIAM Annual Meeting (AN16), to be held July 11-15 in Boston. Learn more about the SIAM Fellows Program.

Call for Nominations: SIAM Board, Council and Committees

SIAM needs your help! Our Nomination Committee and Committee on Committees and Appointments (CCA) are about to start the process of nominating new members for the SIAM Board, Council and committees. The vitality of SIAM depends on its leadership from members like you! Please consider taking a moment to let us know who you think would make a great leader.

PUBLISHING NEWS & NOTES

New SIAM Journal on Applied Algebra and Geometry: Submissions Open March 23

Our newest journal – SIAM Journal on Applied Algebra and Geometry (SIAGA) – begins taking submissions March 23.

As of that date, authors can visit the journal webpage to find the link to submit articles. SIAGA will publish research articles on the development or the application of algebraic, geometric, and topological methods. The connection to applications will be strong and must be clearly established. Authors are encouraged to read the Call for Papers as well as SIAGA’s Editorial Policy.

The journal is under the leadership of Editor-in-Chief Bernd Sturmfels of the University of California, Berkeley.

SIAM ANNUAL MEETING 2016

AN16 will be held July 11-15, 2016 in Boston, MA, in parallel with our Life Sciences meeting (LS16). Will you join us? Get all the details on AN16.

John von Neumann Lecturer: Donald E. Knuth

We are pleased to announce Donald E. Knuth will deliver The John von Neumann Lecture at AN16. The John von Neumann Lecture, SIAM’s flagship lecture, is awarded for outstanding and distinguished contributions to the field of applied mathematical sciences and for the effective communication of these ideas to the community.

Knuth is Fletcher Jones Professor of Computer Science, Emeritus, at Stanford University and is awarded the prize in recognition of his transformative contributions to mathematics and computer science. He founded the field of analysis of algorithms and gave it a rigorous mathematical footing. He is renowned for his TeX and Metafont typesetting software and for his ongoing “The Art of Computer Programming” book series. He is a brilliant communicator at all levels. Learn more about the John von Neumann Lecture.

Career Fair: Send Us Your Resume

As a pre-registered attendee for AN16, you may be interested in the Career Fair sessions on Monday, July 11, 2016. Job seekers are requested to submit resumes to [email protected] (using subject line “AN16 Career Fair Resume – LAST NAME”) through July 1, 2016 so they can be provided to participating employers in advance. See complete resume preparation requirements at The Career Fair at SIAM Conferences: A Guide.

The fair will feature representatives from employers in industry and government who will be prepared to discuss opportunities for internships, postdoctoral appointments, and full-time jobs. Check out the growing list of employers participating.

Association for Women in Mathematics Workshop

The Association for Women in Mathematics (AWM) will hold a Workshop for Women Graduate Students and Recent PhDs in conjunction with AN16.  This will include the AWM-SIAM Kovalevsky Prize Lecture by Lisa Fauci, Tulane University, Biofluids of reproduction: oscillators, viscoelastic networks and sticky situations, as well as research talks by recent PhDs and a career panel addressing the challenges facing female scientists and mathematicians.

All registered attendees of the Annual Meeting are invited to attend the AWM Workshop technical sessions. Visit the AN16 workshop page for more information as it becomes available.

Workshop Celebrating Diversity

We’re excited to once again host the Workshop Celebrating Diversity at AN16. This annual event provides a chance for students to listen to technical talks presented by minority graduate students and early career speakers.  The sessions cover a diverse range of fields that include applications to biology, stochastic processes, and complex models.

All registered attendees of the Annual Meeting are invited to attend the Workshop Celebrating Diversity sessions. Visit the AN16 website for more information as it becomes available.

M3 CHALLENGE

High School Students Model New Approaches to Mobility, Driving Technologies

During the M3 Challenge weekend in late February, 1,100 teams of students from throughout the US spent 14 hours gathering and evaluating data on the rapidly-changing landscape of the automotive industry, in which automakers are providing the transportation options of the future, including self-driving cars and vehicles that run entirely on alternative fuel or renewable energy. Read the full 2016 M3 Challenge problem statement.
