SIAM Launches New Website
Last week, we launched a brand new www.siam.org website. Our primary goal for this project - one that was two years in the making - was to make our website easier to use, and generally more valuable, for those in our community. We wanted to give you information that's relevant to you, and make finding that info a piece of cake. Learn more about what's new, and please take some time to peruse the new site yourself.
Reflections from a SIAM Science Policy Fellowship Recipient
SIAM is proud to have recently welcomed the inaugural recipients of our new SIAM Science Policy Fellowship. Natalie Sheils, part of the first group of seven fellows, shares how her career journey has landed her where she is today, and her experiences at the recent SIAM Committee on Science Policy (CSP) meeting. Learn more about Natalie and these important programs.
Subscribe to SIAM's YouTube Channel
Did you know SIAM has a YouTube channel with tons of awesome (and FREE) video resources? Subscribing to this channel allows you to see more of our content, more easily. Once you subscribe, any new videos SIAM publishes will show up in your “Subscriptions” feed on the YouTube homepage. Subscribe by visiting this link, then click the red “Subscribe” button on the top right-hand corner of the screen and sign-in with a Google account – it’s that easy!
SIAM Fellows Update: Deadline Changed for Class of 2019 Nominations
This year’s deadline for nominating Fellows has been pushed forward a few weeks so that the Fellows Selection Committee may have sufficient time to review all nomination packages. The new deadline for nominations for the SIAM Fellows Class of 2019 is Wednesday, October 17, 2018. In addition, new rules have been put in place regarding the Fellows nomination packages. Learn more about the changes to the Fellows nominations process, and contact Maggie Hohenadel with any questions! Nominations are currently being accepted, and will remain open until October 17.

Publishing News & Notes |
Submit to the Newest SIAM Journal, SIMODS
The new SIAM Journal on Mathematics of Data Science (SIMODS) is accepting submissions! Author submissions showcase significant advances in the data and information sciences, including applications to science, engineering, business, and medicine. Learn more about this cutting-edge publication and how to submit your work.
SIMA Celebrates 50th Volume
SIAM Journal on Mathematical Analysis (SIMA) publishes its 50th volume this year, and to celebrate this milestone, we are providing access to the journal’s 10 most-read articles for free through the end of 2018! SIMA’s history began with 13 articles comprising Volume 1, Issue 1 in February 1970. Since then, the journal has grown to the point of receiving about 600 submissions each year, with some 150 research articles published annually. Hear from coauthor of the journal’s most popular article - Felix Otto - as to why the paper continues to spark so much interest, and if you are interested in submitting to SIMA yourself, learn more about the editorial and submission policies for this esteemed publication.

Conference Updates |
All about Annual Meeting! AN18 is being held jointly with the SIAM Conference on Mathematical Aspects of Materials Science ( MS18), the SIAM Conference on Applied Mathematics Education ( ED18), and the SIAM Workshop on Network Science ( NS18).
2018 I.E. Block Community Lecture: How Paradoxes Shape Mathematics and Give Us Self-Verifying Computer Programs
This year’s I.E. Block Community Lecture – which is open to the public – will be given by Thomas Hales, University of Pittsburgh. In the past, paradoxes have triggered crisis in math. Now we are designing computer programs that check that other computer programs have no bugs. But can computer programs be fed into themselves to check their own correctness, or does this present a paradox? Hear Hales discuss this and how questions about artificial intelligence may play out in the future. The lecture is on Wednesday, July 11, starting at 6:15 p.m. in the Oregon Ballroom 202/2013. A reception will follow in Prefunction Lobby A. Learn more about the upcoming lecture. See you there!
AN18: John von Neumann Lecture
Charles F. Van Loan, Cornell University, is the 2018 recipient of The John von Neumann Lecture prize in recognition of his pioneering contributions to research in numerical linear algebra and to the exposition of the subject. SIAM’s highest honor and flagship lecture, The John von Neumann Lecture is awarded annually to recognize outstanding and distinguished contributions to the field of applied mathematical sciences and the effective communication of these ideas to the community. Van Loan will deliver the lecture, “Untangling Random Polygons and Other Things,” at the SIAM Annual Meeting in Portland, Oregon on July 10, 2018. Learn more.
AN18: Make the Perfect Pitch - Communication Doctors
Stop by this booth on Monday, July 9, between 3:30 and 5:30 PM in Oregon Ballroom 201, to chat with representing mathematicians, science communicators, and educators about how to turn your complex research into a story that appeals to the public. “Doctors” will offer feedback and advice on how to craft an effective message about your research for future employers, outreach events, or the press. Stop by with a short pitch or summary of your work and let’s make it media ready! Learn more.
AN18: Student Days and Career Fair
Students Days at AN18 are for students and about students. With a student orientation, a Student Lounge in the exhibit hall, talks and posters by Student Chapter Representatives and SIAM Student Paper Prize Winners, a personal meeting with the Invited Speakers, a career fair, and evening receptions, we have all of your networking and career needs covered! Check out the program for details. Job seekers planning to attend the Career Fair are encouraged to submit resumes using subject line “AN18 Career Fair Resume – LAST NAME” through June 25 so they can be provided to participating employers in advance. See complete resume preparation requirements in The Career Fair at SIAM Conferences: A Guide.
AN18: Reception for Inclusion
SIAM is proud to unite with NOGLSTP (The National Organization for Gay and Lesbian Scientists and Technical Professionals) and Spectra (the Association for LGBTQA Mathematicians) to invite you to attend our Reception for Inclusion - to empower, support, and get to know each other.
NOGLSTP-SPECTRA Reception for Inclusion
Wednesday, July 11
8:15 - 9:15 p.m.

AN18: Submit Questions for the Industry Panel
This year’s Industry Panel at AN18 will focus on Career Opportunities & Experiences in Industry & Government. Planning on attending? Submit your questions online now! Deadline for submissions is June 20. Get more details and information about panelists.
AN18: Business Meetings
Catch up on what SIAM has been doing in the past year to serve the applied and computational mathematics community, and welcome the new SIAM Fellows. The meeting is July 10 from 6:15 – 7:00 p.m. in Oregon Ballroom 202/203, followed by the Fellows Reception 7:00 – 7:30 p.m. This will be followed by a business meeting of the SIAG/MS from 7:30 – 8:00 p.m. in Oregon Ballroom 204 and a business meeting of the SIAG/ED from 7:30 – 8:00 p.m. in D136.
