MATH IN THE NEWS

FROM SIAM HQ

New: SIAM Journal on Applied Algebra and Geometry

The past decade has seen an explosion of applications of algebra, geometry, and topology to the real world. As such, the SIAM community has voiced a need for a research journal to cover the emerging area of applied algebra and geometry, and we’ve responded. Newly launched and beginning to publish in February, the SIAM Journal on Applied Algebra and Geometry, led by Bernd Sturmfels as Editor-in-Chief, will showcase world-class researchers and their groundbreaking work in the field. Learn more about this growing field and new SIAM journal in our brand new animation! Watch now.

2017 Brings Changes in SIAM Leadership

As we head into 2017, we would like to recognize and thank some special SIAM leaders who will be hanging up their hats in the New Year, and in some cases, just getting started. As Nicholas Higham begins his time as our incoming President, we thank Pam Cook for her two years of impactful leadership in this role, and look forward to her continued insight as acting Past-President. We also bid adieu to VP of Industry Thomas Grandine following his three-term tenure and welcome aboard Amr El-Bakry. Learn more about how these impressive individuals have been involved in SIAM, what they’ve accomplished, and their plans for the future. And don’t forget to welcome the newest officers for several of our activity groups, whose terms began January 1st. Thank you to our outgoing activity group officers!

Deliberations Begin to Select 2017 SIAM Fellows

Nominations for the new class of SIAM Fellows closed on November 7. The Fellows Selection Committee will select up to 28 nominations from the pool of 154 (which includes 56 new nominations and 98 rollovers). The committee will deliberate early in 2017, and the new class will be announced on March 31. Learn more about our Fellows Program and stay tuned!

Upcoming Deadlines: Gene Golub Summer School

Time in running out! The 2017 Gene Golub SIAM Summer School (GGSSS), being held at the Akademie Berlin- Schmöckwitz in Germany, is accepting applications until February 1, 2017. Interested? Apply now. In addition, you can help organize the 2018 GGSSS! Proposals are currently being solicited and Letters of Intent are due January 31, 2017. Learn more about both of these opportunities now.

PUBLISHING NEWS & NOTES

Welcome New Journal EICs: Dan Kral & Des Higham

SIAM journals have welcomed two new Editors-in-Chief as of the New Year. At the SIAM Journal on Discrete Mathematics (SIDMA), Dan Kral, of the Mathematics Institute and Department of Computer Science at the University of Warwick, takes over for David Williamson, who has headed the journal since 2012. Tim Kelley steps down after two terms as SIAM Review’s (SIREV) Editor-in-Chief and Des Higham, professor in the Department of Mathematics and Statistics at the University of Strathclyde, takes the reins. Learn more about Dan and Des in SIAM News.

Hot Off the Press: Two New Books

Barriers and Transport in Unsteady Flows: A Melnikov Approach
Sanjeeva Balasuriya

Barriers and Transport in Unsteady Flows: A Melnikov Approach provides an extensive introduction and bibliography, specifically elucidating the difficulties arising when flows are unsteady and highlighting relevance in geophysics and microfluidics; careful and rigorous development of the mathematical theory of unsteady flow barriers within the context of nonautonomous stable and unstable manifolds, richly complemented with examples; and chapters on exciting new research in the control of flow barriers and the optimization of transport across them. Learn more.

Data Assimilation: Methods, Algorithms, and Applications
Mark Asch, Marc Bocquet, Maëlle Nodet

Data assimilation is an approach that combines observations and model output, with the objective of improving the latter. This book places data assimilation into the broader context of inverse problems and the theory, methods, and algorithms that are used for their solution. It provides a framework for, and insight into, the inverse problem nature of data assimilation, emphasizing “why” and not just “how.” Methods and diagnostics are emphasized, enabling readers to readily apply them to their own field of study. What is Math Modeling? Video Series Part 3: Making Assumptions

Have you seen our recently-released seven-part video series introducing math modeling and diving into the specific components of this process? After defining the problem statement, modelers must make assumptions to reduce the number of factors affecting the model. This episode brings us one step closer to building an effective model, and is the third segment in this new math modeling video series. Watch this video to learn more and please remember to share these resources with your colleagues!
