Science policy decisions greatly affect the state of scientific research. That's why SIAM plays an active role in advocacy for federal support of mathematical and computational science research, and spearheads activities to ensure sound scientific policy. In order to keep members informed and engaged about important issues affecting the discipline—and offer guidelines on how they can take action—SIAM provides timely information to the community through a science policy electronic mailing list. Numerical Methods for Conservation Laws: From Analysis to Algorithms
Jan S. Hesthaven

Conservation laws are the mathematical expression of the principles of conservation and provide effective and accurate predictive models of our physical world. Although intense research activity during the last decades has led to substantial advances in the development of powerful computational methods for conservation laws, their solution remains a challenge and many questions are left open; thus it is an active and fruitful area of research.

This book is intended for graduate students in computational mathematics and researchers seeking a comprehensive introduction to modern methods for solving conservation laws. Students and researchers in applied sciences and engineering will benefit from the book’s emphasis on algorithmic aspects of complex algorithms. The text also includes extensive references which allows researchers to pursue advanced research and results. Learn more.

Linear Algebra and Matrices
Shmuel Friedland and Mohsen Aliabadi

The authors use abstract notions and arguments to give the complete proof of the Jordan canonical form and, more generally, the rational canonical form of square matrices over fields. They also provide the notion of tensor products of vector spaces and linear transformations. Matrices are treated in depth, with coverage of the stability of matrix iterations, the eigenvalue properties of linear transformations in inner product spaces, singular value decomposition, and min-max characterizations of Hermitian matrices and nonnegative irreducible matrices. The authors show the many topics and tools encompassed by modern linear algebra to emphasize its relationship to other areas of mathematics. Learn more.

Resources: What is Math Modeling? Part 6: Analysis

As we rev up for this year's M3 Challenge, we're putting the focus on this free resource for high school level educators and students - our seven-part math modeling video series! Mathematical modeling uses math to represent, analyze, make predictions, or otherwise provide insight into real world phenomena. In this video - number six in this seven-part series - modelers take an honest look at the body of work, discerning the model’s accuracy, sensitivity, strengths, and weaknesses. When you know all this, you’ve got one step left in the modeling process: report it to the world! Watch the video.
