SIAM Unwrapped – February 2016

Dear SIAM members,

Although 2016 just started, the SIAM Annual Meeting is quickly approaching. In this issue, read about some new additions to the AN16 agenda, like a panel on “BIG” career opportunities, and a workshop on optics and photonics. And it’s your lucky day – the SIAM student travel award deadline has been extended to February 22 for four of our upcoming meetings – Nonlinear Waves, Life Sciences, Network Science and Annual meetings.

Stay tuned as reeve up for these and other exciting 2016 activities and initiatives!

MATH IN THE NEWS

FROM SIAM HQ

Welcome to the New SIAM Pacific Northwest Section

We are pleased to add a new section to our repertoire! The SIAM Pacific Northwest Section (SIAMPNWS) became official in early 2016 and aims to enhance the communication among its members, promote collaboration for basic research and applications of mathematics to industry and science, and to support the SIAM mission in the Pacific Northwest region of the US and Canada. The section plans to do this through a variety of activities, including a biennial section meeting and other seminars and workshops. Learn more about section officers, activities, and how to get involved.

PUBLISHING NEWS & NOTES

New SIAM LaTeX2e Macro Set – Enhanced, Modernized, Ready for Authors

Last month, SIAM released a modernized set of enhanced LaTeX2e Macro files for use with 11 of our journals. A corresponding upgrade for our four (soon to be five) exclusively online journal macros will follow. The revised SIAM Standard Macro set includes such new features as cross-referencing commands with hyperlinking, integrated support for supplemental materials, the automatic generation of bookmarks corresponding to section headings and the ability to generate PDF files directly with PDFLaTeX, PostScript via LaTeX and DVIPS, and more. Learn more about this update and how it benefits you as an author.

SIAM ANNUAL MEETING 2016

AN16 will be held July 11-15, 2016 in Boston, MA. Will you join us? Get all the details on AN16.

The Career Fair is Back!

This year, SIAM will be sponsoring a Career Fair on alternatives to academia as part of AN16 and the joint Life Sciences Meeting (LS16) on Monday, July 11. The SIAM Career Fair offers a unique and interactive opportunity for conference attendees and prospective employers to meet and discuss career opportunities. The 2016 fair will host representatives from Boeing, HP Labs, Aerospace Corporation, MIT Lincoln Laboratory and more. We hope to see you there! Learn more.

Interesting in learning about other non-academic career opportunities? Tom Grandine and Rachel Levy are organizing a panel discussion on Business, Industry and Government (BIG) Career Opportunities at AN16, too. More info soon on the #SIAMAN16 webpage.

New: SIAM-NSF Optics and Photonics Workshop

As part of AN16, we will also be hosting the SIAM-NSF Optics and Photonics Workshop on Monday, July 11. Due to recent advances in computational tools, materials science and nanostructure fabrication, mathematicians and computational scientists have a larger role to play than ever in optics and photonics.

The workshop will feature 11 accomplished applied mathematicians working in the field of optics and photonics. They will highlight important open problems and discuss the NSF programs in these areas. Travel awards will be available for graduate students and early career researchers, as well as researchers who are members of underrepresented minorities of any rank. More info coming soon on the AN16 webpage.

CONFERENCE UPDATES

Request for Proposals: 2017 NSF-CBMS Regional Research Conferences

To stimulate interest and activity in mathematical research, the National Science Foundation (NSF) plans to support up to 10 NSF-CBMS Regional Research Conferences in 2017. These conferences are intended to stimulate interest and activity in mathematical research. Each five day conference features a distinguished lecturer who delivers 10 lectures on a topic of important current research in one sharply focused area of the mathematical sciences. Proposals for conferences to be held in 2017 are due by April 29, 2016. Learn more and submit.
