SIAM Hires Director of Development and Corporate Relations

SIAM is pleased to welcome Dr. Ken Boyden, who assumed the position in November to expand the impact of SIAM’s already far-reaching programs and initiatives. "The opportunity to establish the foundation upon which SIAM will seek, receive, and implement philanthropic support from our community is a truly compelling role to me,” said Boyden, who brings more than 30 years of non-profit, development, and legal experience to SIAM. Having a development and fundraising team is something new for SIAM and provides an opportunity for devoted SIAM members to contribute to the health and sustenance of the organization. Learn more here

M3 Challenge: Got a Problem?

SIAM is seeking problem ideas for MathWorks Math Modeling (M3) Challenge, a national high school math modeling competition in which teams of students are given 14 hours to solve an open-ended, applied math-modeling problem related to a real-world issue. A $500 honoraria will be paid for any problem selected and used as the official Challenge problem. Submit your ideas here.

Invite a Visiting Lecturer to Speak at Your Institution

The SIAM Visiting Lecture Program (VLP) is an opportunity for institutions to invite inspirational applied mathematicians and computational scientists to speak at their campuses. For the month of December, we are featuring VLP speakers Bonita Saunders (Research Mathematician at National Institute of Standards & Technology), Bob LaBarre (Principal Mathematician at United Technologies Research Center), Rob Van Kirk (Senior Scientist at Henry's Fork Foundation), and Dirk Hartmann (Project Manager at Siemens AG). Learn more about and contact these speakers.

SIAM-MfA Math Modeling Workshop for High School Teachers a Success

More than 60 high school math teachers traveled to Albany, NY, in early November to take part in a hands-on workshop geared toward helping them better understand math modeling and how they can teach it in their classrooms. SIAM members Karen Bliss (Virginia Military Institute), Ben Galluzzo (Clarkson University), and Katie Kavanagh (Clarkson University) served as facilitators for the all-day event, which was funded by Math for America, an organization committed to teachers. Trefethen differs fundamentally from other works on approximation theory in a number of ways: its emphasis is on topics close to numerical algorithms; concepts are illustrated with Chebfun; and each chapter is a PUBLISHable MATLAB M-file, available online. Learn more.

An Introduction to Compressed Sensing by M. Vidyasagar presents significant concepts never before discussed as well as new advances in the theory, providing an in-depth initiation to the field of compressed sensing. Learn more.
