COVID-19 Update: SIAM’s Response and Resources

During these challenging times, we want to reiterate how much we value our members and volunteers and the entire SIAM community. Your dedication, hard work, and support of SIAM and each other is seen and appreciated now more than ever. As your professional society, we are working hard to help facilitate a better understanding of the coronavirus and the research surrounding it.

We have made several resources available to help educate and mobilize the SIAM community, including free access to our epidemiology collection; 2,000+ lectures & videos from past SIAM conferences; information about coronavirus-related funding agency accommodations; and a collection of mathematical resources about COVID-19. We will continue sharing important SIAM-specific updates here. Please check back for new information and reach out to us if you have any questions or feedback.

April is Mathematics and Statistics Awareness Month

Now more than ever we are seeing how mathematical and statistical techniques are used to help solve real-world problems, focusing on topics like disease spread, climate change, cancer therapies, and so much more. In honor of Mathematics and Statistics Awareness Month, we’ve put together seven things you might not know about mathematics, statistics, and this honorary month. Help spread the word this month about the important role mathematical models and statistical analysis play in solving real-world problems.

May Issue of SIAM News Will Focus on Infectious Disease Modeling

The May 2020 issue of SIAM News will be a special issue on the mathematics of infectious disease modeling. The issue will highlight some of the tools of applied and computational mathematics that offer insight into the spread of infectious diseases, with particular emphasis on COVID-19. Articles will address the mathematical models and techniques behind intervention strategies, drug repositioning, and disease propagation, with application to various countries. The issue will be available online after May 1.

Talking BIG Jobs Live Interview Happening April 22

The third interview of the Talking BIG Jobs Interview Series has been rescheduled for April 22 and will feature Sarah Minucci interviewing guest Helen Moore, Director of Applied Mathematics at Applied BioMath. Participants will learn how Dr. Moore's background as a mathematician has informed her career and her current work. The interview will take place April 22 at 3 p.m. EST, and will be webcast live. Learn more and register for the webinar. If you missed the most recent Talking BIG Jobs Interview Series webinar on January 15 featuring Transamerica data scientist Stephanie Fitchett, watch it now.

Boys are More Confident than Girls When it Comes to Math, SIAM Survey Shows

A national survey of 16- to 18-year-olds shows that even among some of America’s top high school students, boys favor math more than girls and have more confidence in math class. Conducted by SIAM, the survey gathered responses from 1,253 11th and 12th graders from across the U.S. All were participants in this year’s MathWorks Math Modeling (M3) Challenge. Learn more.

Invite a Visiting Lecturer to Your Institution

The SIAM Visiting Lecturer Program (VLP) is an opportunity for institutions to invite applied mathematicians and computational scientists to speak at their campuses. For the month of April, we are featuring VLP speakers Sumanth Swaminathan (Co-founder and CEO, Iterex Therapeutics), Tanya Moore (VP at Goodwill), Jacqueline Nolis (Owner of Nolis, LLC), and André Gaul (Co-Founder and CEO at PaperHive). SIAM Epidemiology Collection Available

In response to the COVID-19 pandemic, SIAM has made a collection of 150+ epidemiology-related SIAM journal articles, proceedings, and book chapters freely available for one year. We hope this content on epidemiology, disease modeling, and pandemics and vaccines will help in the rapid fight against this global problem. Access the collection here.

Hot Off the Press: New Textbook from SIAM

Foundations of Applied Mathematics, Volume 2: Algorithms, Approximation, Optimization by Jeffrey Humpherys and Tyler J. Jarvis is a textbook geared toward undergraduate and beginning graduate students in mathematics, data science, and machine learning. It presents the foundations of algorithms, approximation, and optimization—essential topics in modern applied and computational mathematics. Learn more and order it here.

Q&A with SIAGA Editor-in-Chief Bernd Sturmfels

SIAM Journal on Applied Algebra and Geometry (SIAGA) has established itself as the premier journal on algebraic, geometric, and topological methods in applied mathematics. Learn more about SIAGA and Editor-in-Chief Bernd Sturmfels here.

Conference Updates

SIAM/CAIMS Annual Meeting (AN20) Cancelled, With Some Virtual Sessions, Due to COVID-19

In light of continued disruption to travel and gatherings caused by the COVID-19 pandemic, including a ban on public events in Toronto until at least June 30, SIAM and CAIMS leadership have been forced to cancel the joint Annual Meeting originally scheduled to take place in Toronto, Canada, July 6-10. Select virtual sessions will take place however. More information will be forthcoming regarding moving some of the AN20 content, including the co-located Workshop on Network Science, online.

SIAM Conference on Imaging Science (IS20) Postponed Until Further Notice

SIAM Conference on Imaging Science, originally scheduled to take place alongside AN20 in Toronto, Canada, July 6-9, has been postponed until further notice as SIAM and the co-chairs explore alternatives. As of today, SIAM has been forced to reschedule, postpone, or cancel all of its conferences through mid-July of 2020. We are exploring the possibility of offering content from some of these conferences online. Up-to-date information on the novel coronavirus and its impact on SIAM conferences is available here.

Lectures & Videos from Past Conferences Available

SIAM has been recording invited lectures, prize lectures, minitutorials, and selected minisymposia from our conferences since 2008. Many upcoming SIAM conferences may be cancelled or postponed, but if you have coursework that requires you to attend talks, take a look at our vast collection of 2,000+ presentations. It may be a helpful resource!

Conference Registrations, Submissions, & Deadlines
