SIAM Unwrapped - April 2016

April 2016

Dear SIAM members,

In this issue, we’re introducing you to the most recent group of distinguished SIAM Fellows, and shedding light on how you can get involved, either as SIAM member, author, committee member or even just spreading the word about the importance of applied math and computational science during Math Awareness Month. MATH IN THE NEWS

FROM SIAM HQ

Spread the Word:Math Awareness Month

The 2016 theme for Math Awareness Month is the Future of Prediction. This is the time of year when people throughout the country, and even the world, learn about the importance of the mathematical sciences in society, and that math plays a vital part in everyday life. Help spread the world. Learn more and download the poster at www.mathaware.org/mam/2016/.

Congratulations to the 2016 Class of SIAM Fellows

Each year, SIAM names Fellows who have made outstanding contributions to fields served by our organization. Fellows are nominated by peers for excellence in research and/or industrial work, educational and community activities, or other forms of achievements related to the goals of SIAM. This year, we are pleased to recognize 30 distinguished members as Fellows. Please view the full list and details on all 2016 Fellows.

Learn more about the SIAM Fellows program. The 2016 class will be recognized at the SIAM Business Meeting to be held at the 2016 SIAM Annual Meeting in Boston in July.

Posted: Guidelines for Assessment and Instruction in Mathematics Modeling Education

A partnership between SIAM and COMAP, the Guidelines for Assessment and Instruction in Mathematical Modeling Education (GAIMME) was created to help the modeling process to be understood as part of STEM studies and research, and taught as a basic tool for problem solving and logical thinking. GAIMME helps define core competencies to include in student experiences, and provides direction to enhance math modeling education at all levels. A mix of professionals wrote and reviewed to present various levels and perspectives. The GAIMME report is a freely downloadable report – check it out and share it.

Update: SIAM Committee on Science Policy Activity

Last month, our Committee on Science Policy (CSP) held their annual Spring meeting where they met with key decision-makers at federal agencies and in Congress to help influence legislation and federal programs related to applied math and computational science. The group learned about the recent fiscal year 2017 budget request, discussed new research initiatives, and provided input on issues concerning the SIAM community. Learn more about the important work this community is doing.

Newest Member-Get-a-Member Winners

The SIAM Member-Get-a-Member program encourages members to invite their colleagues to join SIAM. This past year, 100+ members referred colleagues who joined as a result. In each of these cases, the new and existing members were entered into a drawing to win a prize. Congratulations to the following people, whose names were randomly selected as winners!

Fuad Aleskerov, of the Russian Academy of Sciences, won an iPad. Aleskerov joined SIAM after being referred by SIAM Member (and past president) Irene Fonseca, Carnegie Mellon University.

John King, University of Nottingham, won a free year of SIAM membership. He referred his colleague Gary Mirams, the University of Oxford.

Utkarsh Prabhu, Vellore Institute of Technology, won a free registration to the SIAM conference of his choice. He joined SIAM after being referred by his colleague, SIAM member Shreyansh Mittal, also of Vellore Institute.

Nicholas Garcia, Brown University, won a free SIAM book. He joined SIAM after being referred by his colleague, Dejan Slepcev, of Carnegie Mellon University.

A new contest starts now, refer your colleagues for a chance to win next year.

PUBLISHING NEWS & NOTES

New SIAM Journal on Applied Algebra and Geometry: Submissions Open

SIAGA, our new algebraic geometry journal, launched last month and seeks strong submissions. The journal webpage offers links to author instructions, editorial policy, and the makeup of the editorial board. Authors can now submit their work.

SIAM Journal on Applied Algebra and Geometry will publish research articles on the development or the application of algebraic, geometric, and topological methods. The connection to applications will be strong and must be clearly established. Bernd Sturmfels of the University of California, Berkeley, leads SIAGA as Editor-in-Chief. Learn more and submit your work.

SIAM ANNUAL MEETING 2016

AN16 will be held July 11-15, 2016 in Boston, MA, in parallel with our Life Sciences meeting (LS16). Will you join us? Get all the details on AN16.

Career Fair: Employer List is Growing!

Join us at the Career Fair at the Annual Meeting! Bayer and Sanofi just enlisted to participate and they want to talk to you about your future in mathematics! The fair will feature representatives from employers in industry and government looking to discuss opportunities for internships, postdoctoral appointments, and full-time jobs.

The fair, happening July 11, 2016, is a full day event (10:30 a.m. to 9:15 p.m.).  Job seekers are requested to submit resumes to [email protected] (using subject line “AN16 Career Fair Resume – LAST NAME”) through July 1, 2016 so they can be provided to participating employers in advance. Find complete resume preparation and more information on the Career Fair.

Attend: NSF-SIAM Workshop on Optics and Photonics

This workshop will be an opportunity for leaders in the field to present their vision of the future of research. The goals are to familiarize a wide range of researchers with the NSF call for proposals “Optics and Photonics” and encourage collaborations among them. The Optics and Photonics (OP) program is an NSF-wide activity which involves multiple Divisions within the Directorate for Mathematical and Physical Sciences (MPS).

Travel awards will be available for graduate students, early career researchers, and for researchers who are members of underrepresented minorities of any rank who are based at US institutions. The travel award provides maximum of $650 for travel and a free registration to AN16.” The travel award deadline is April 18, 2016. Learn more.

M3 CHALLENGE

Applied Mathematicians Distinguish Top Teams; Tune in to Final Event Livestream

Moody’s Mega Math (M3) Challenge judges serve a very important purpose – they decide which teams receive a share of up to $150,000 in scholarship prizes. Over the last 4-6 weeks, applied mathematicians read and scored each solution paper according to the competition guidelines and identified the best submissions. During the second round of judging, a smaller panel extensively read and discussed the remaining papers to select those worthy of receiving semi-finalist and honorable mention awards, and tentatively ranked the top six finalist teams.

The third and final phase of judging involves presentations by the six finalist teams at Moody’s Corporation headquarters on April 25. A panel of Ph.D.-level professional mathematicians will confirm the Champ, runner up, third place winner of these top six teams, also resulting in three teams with “Finalist” distinction. Tune into the Final Event presentations live on April 25! Learn more.

CONFERENCE UPDATES

SIAM Sponsors Workshop on Nonlinear Optimization Algorithms and Industrial Applications

A Workshop on Nonlinear Optimization Algorithms and Industrial Applications will take place at the Fields Institute, Toronto, on June 2-4, 2016. All are welcome to attend the workshop. Thursday, June 2 will be designated as Industry Day, with all talks focused on topics relevant to industry, so participants from industry and students interested in industrial careers are especially encouraged to attend on Thursday, and, if they wish, present a poster in the poster session. A limited number of travel grants are available for graduate students, postdocs and early career researchers who present a poster. The deadline for applying for a travel grant is April 15. The workshop is sponsored in part by SIAM. Learn more and apply for travel support.
