SIAM Announces Class of 2017 Fellows

The Society for Industrial and Applied Mathematics (SIAM) is pleased to announce the 2017 Class of SIAM Fellows. These distinguished members were nominated for their exemplary research as well as outstanding service to the community. Through their contributions, SIAM Fellows help to advance the fields of applied mathematics and computational science. These individuals will be recognized for their achievements during the SIAM Annual Meeting, happening July 10-14, 2017 in Pittsburgh, PA.

Kevin Zumbrun, Indiana University

Zhaojun Bai is Professor of Computer Science and Mathematics at University of California, Davis, and is also Faculty Scientist in the Computational Research Division of Lawrence Berkeley Lab. He is being recognized for significant contributions to numerical linear algebra, eigenvalue computation in particular, and its application to computational science and engineering. Bai has served as the Associate Editor of the SIAM Journal on Matrix Analysis and as a member of multiple SIAM conference organizing committees.

Peter Benner is Director and Scientific Member of the Max Planck Institute for Dynamics of Complex Technical Systems and being recognized for his outstanding work in numerical methods for optimal control and model reduction. Benner has been lecturer at a previous Gene Golub SIAM Summer School (Shanghai) and serves as Associate Editor of SIAM Journal on Matrix Analysis and Applications. He has also served as a member of the Editorial Board of the SIAM book series Fundamentals of Algorithms.

Angelika Bunse-Gerstner, Universität Bremen, is a Professor of Applied Mathematics. She is being recognized for contributions in Numerical Linear Algebra, Control Theory and Model Order Reduction. She has previously served as a member of the SIAM Council and Co-editor of the SIAM Journal on Matrix Analysis and Applications.

Emmanuel Candès is Chair of the Department of Statistics and the Barnum-Simons Chair in Mathematics and Statistics at Stanford University. He is also Professor of Electrical Engineering and Professor of Mathematics and Statistics at Stanford. He is being recognized for pioneering work in mathematics of information, compressive sensing, computational harmonic analysis, statistics, and scientific computing. Candès is the recipient of many prizes, including the SIAM/AMS George David Birkhoff Prize; 2014 SIAM Outstanding Paper Prize; 2012 SIAM/MOS Lagrange Prize in Continuous Optimization; 2010 SIAM George Pólya Prize; 2005 James H. Wilkinson Prize in Numerical Analysis and Scientific Computing. He has served on the Editorial Board for the SIAM Journal on Imaging Sciences as well as the SIAM Polya Prize Committee, and the SIAM Major Awards Committee.

Rama Cont is Professor of Mathematics and Chair in Mathematical Finance at Imperial College London and CNRS Senior Research Fellow (Directeur de Recherche) at the Universit Paris VI (France). He is also Director of CFM-Imperial Institute of Quantitative Finance. Cont is being recognized for his contributions to financial mathematics and stochastic analysis. He has previously served as the Director of the SIAM Activity Group on Financial Mathematics, Associate Editor of the SIAM Journal of Financial Mathematics, and Member of the SIAM Junior Prize committee for Financial Mathematics.

Ricardo Cortez, Tulane University, is William Larkin Duren Professor of Mathematics and is being recognized for contributions to numerical methods for incompressible fluid dynamics and leadership in promoting diversity in the mathematical sciences. He has served as Editor and Associate Editor of SIAM Review, and Co-chair of a previous SIAM Annual Meeting.

Lieven De Lathauwer is Professor at KU Leuven affiliated with two departments; Science, Engineering and Technology and Electrical Engineering Department (ESAT). He is being recognized for fundamental contributions to the algebraic understanding, computation, and application of tensor decompositions. He was nominated for the SIAM Linear Algebra Prize in 2009 and has served four terms as Associate Editor of the SIAM Journal on Matrix Analysis and Applications.

Bart De Moor, KU Leuven, is Full Professor in the Department of Electrical Engineering. De Moor is being recognized for contributions to concepts and algorithms in numerical (multi-)linear algebra and applications in engineering. He has served in many international leadership positions and is the recipient of several scientific awards.

Andreas Griewank is the Dean of the School of Mathematical Sciences and Information Technology, Yachay Tech University. Griewank is being recognized for fundamental contributions to algorithmic differentiation and to iterative methods for nonlinear optimization. He has served on the SIAM News Editorial Board and the SIAM Board, and currently serves on the SIAM Council.

Helge Holden is Professor of Mathematics, Norwegian University of Science and Technology, and President of the Royal Norwegian Society of Sciences and Letters. He is being recognized for contributions to nonlinear partial differential equations and related fields, to research administration, and to the dissemination of mathematics. Holden has been a SIAM member since approximately 1985 and has been active in several different fields in mathematics.

Panayotis Kevrekidis, University of Massachusetts, Amherst, is a Distinguished Professor of Mathematics and is being recognized for fundamental contributions to the existence, stability and dynamics of nonlinear waves with applications to atomic, optical and materials physics. Kevrekidis has previously been awarded the SIAM T. Brooke Benjamin Prize in Nonlinear Waves, SIAM J.D. Crawford Prize in Dynamical Systems, and SIAM Outstanding Paper Award.

Vipin Kumar is Regents Professor and William Norris Chair in Large Scale Computing, Department of Computer Science and Engineering, University of Minnesota, and is being recognized for contributions to data mining and high performance computing. Kumar has served as Co-founder and Steering Committee Chair of the SIAM International Conference on Data Mining, among many other leadership positions in the field.

Karl Kunisch is Professor and Head of the Department of Mathematics at the Karl Franzens University of Graz, and Managing Scientific Director of the Radon Institute of the Austrian Academy of Sciences in Linz. He is being recognized for contributions to Inverse Problems, Approximation to Infinite Dimensional Control Systems, and Computational Methods. He is editor of numerous journals, including SIAM Journal on Numerical Analysis and SIAM Journal on Control and Optimization. He is the previous recipient of the SIAM Outstanding Paper Prize.

Monique Laurent is Researcher at Centrum Wiskunde & Informatica, and Professor, Tilburg University, Department of Econometrics and Operations Research. Laurent is being recognized for contributions to discrete and polynomial optimization, and revealing interactions between them. Laurent has served as Associate Editor of the SIAM Journal on Optimization as well as on the Editorial Board of the MPS-SIAM book series on optimization. She is currently Associate Editor of the SIAM Journal on Discrete Mathematics.

Mark A. Lewis, University of Alberta, is Professor and Senior Canada Research Chair in the Mathematical Biology Department of Mathematical and Statistical Sciences and Department of Biological Sciences. He is also Director of the Centre for Mathematical Biology. Lewis is being recognized for major contributions to mathematical biology and the study of spatial dynamics processes. He has also served on the Editorial Board of SIAM Review.

Lois Curfman McInnes is Senior Computational Scientist, Mathematics and Computer Science Division, Argonne National Laboratory and is being recognized for contributions to scalable numerical algorithms and software libraries for solving large-scale scientific and engineering problems. McInnes was a winner of the 2015 SIAM/ACM Prize in Computational Science and Engineering and Co-Chair of the 2015 SIAM Conference on Computational Science and Engineering. McInnes also serves on the SIAM Education Committee, Editorial Board of SIAM News, and previously as Program Director and Chair of the SIAM Activity Group on Computational Science and Engineering.

Igor Mezić, University of California, Santa Barbara, is Professor and Director, Center for Energy-Efficient Design and Head, Buildings and Design Solutions Group of the Institute for Energy Efficiency. He being recognized for sustained innovation at the dynamical systems theory/applications interface; notably for advances in the use of Koopman operator theory. He has been an invited Plenary Lecturer at previous SIAM conferences, including SIAM Conference on Applications of Dynamical Systems (2009) and SIAM Control Theory Meeting (2005).

Michael Kwok-Po Ng, Hong Kong Baptist University, is Chair Professor in Mathematics and Chair Professor (Affiliate) in Computer Science; Head of Department of Mathematics, MSC Programme Director; Director of Centre for Mathematical Imaging and Vision. He is being recognized for fundamental contributions to algorithms for structured linear systems and image processing. He served as Associate Editor of SIAM Journal on Scientific Computing, SIAM Keynote Speaker of 14th Conference of the International Linear Algebra Society, and the Secretary of East Asia SIAM Section, among other leadership positions, including co-chairing multiple SIAM conferences.

James Renegar, Cornell University, is Professor in the School of Operations Research and Information Engineering and is being recognized for fundamental work on continuous optimization and the interface between algorithms, numerical analysis and algebra. Renegar has served as Associate Editor of the SIAM Journal on Optimization and on organizing committees of SIAM conferences.

Andrew J. Sommese is Chair, Department of Applied and Computational Math and Statistics, and Vincent J. and Annamarie Micus Duncan Professor of Mathematics, University of Notre Dame. Sommese is being recognized for foundational contributions to the numerical solution of polynomial systems and applications of algebraic geometry. He has served as Member of Advisory Board for the SIAM Activity Group in Algebraic Geometry.

Joel H. Spencer, Courant Institute of Mathematical Sciences, New York University, is Professor of Mathematics and Computer Science and is being recognized for contributions to discrete mathematics and theory of computing, particularly Random graphs and networks, Ramsey theory, Logic and Randomized algorithms. Spencer served as Vice-Chair and then Chair of the SIAM Activity Group for Discrete Mathematics in the group’s early years and has continued to be involved in SIAM activities since, including his involvement in the SIAM Discrete Math conference organization in 2012 and 2016.

Gabor Stepan, Budapest University of Technology and Economics, is Professor of Applied Mechanics and Head of Department, Department of Applied Mechanics. He being recognized for contributions to the theory and analysis of delayed dynamical systems and their applications. He has been a member of the SIAM Jürgen Moser Lecture Prize Committee and highly involved in many SIAM Conferences on Dynamical Systems as a participant, presenter, and organizer.

Daniel B. Szyld, Temple University, is Professor in the Department of Mathematics and is being recognized for contributions to numerical, applied, and core linear algebra. He is currently the Editor in Chief of the Journal on Matrix Analysis and Applications, and previously served as the SIAM Vice-President at Large, Chair of the Gene Golub SIAM Summer School Committee, Chair of the SIAM Activity Group on Linear Algebra and Member of the Join Policy Board of Mathematics Committee for the Mathematics Awareness Month 2008.

Jean E. Taylor is Visiting Academic, Courant Institute of Mathematical Sciences, New York University; and Professor Emerita, Rutgers University, The State University of New Jersey and is being recognized for pathbreaking contributions at the interface of mathematics and materials science for the study of crystal growth, optimal shapes of crystals, and minimal surfaces. Taylor’s previous SIAM involvements include Polya Prize committee, 2007; Lagrange Prize Committee 2014; helped organized SIAM Conference on Mathematics and Materials Science, Philadelphia, 1997; and Minisymposium on Interface Motion, ICIAM, Edinburgh, 1999.

Marc Teboulle, Professor, School of Mathematical Sciences, Tel Aviv University, is being recognized for fundamental contributions to continuous optimization theory, analysis, development of algorithms, and scientific applications. Teboulle currently serves on the Editorial Board for the SIAM Journal of Optimization and was a Plenary Speaker at the SIAM Annual Meeting in 2016.

J. André Weideman is being recognized for powerful and elegant numerical algorithms derived from complex analysis. Weideman, Professor, Department of Mathematical Sciences (Applied Mathematics), Stellenbosch University, South Africa, has served as Reviewer for many international journals (SIAM, IMA, Royal Society, ACM, etc.) and as a Book reviewer for SIAM.

Carol S. Woodward, is Research staff member and Project Leader, Nonlinear Solvers and Differential Equations, Center for Applied Scientific Computing, Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory; she is also Adjunct Professor, Mathematics Department, North Carolina State University. Woodward is being recognized for contributions to the development and application of numerical algorithms and software for large-scale simulations of complex physical phenomena. She currently serves on the Editorial Board for the SIAM Journal on Scientific Computing and previously served on the Editorial Boards for SIAM News and the SIAM Journal on Numerical Analysis. She has served as the Chair and Secretary of the SIAM Activity Group on Geosciences, Elected member of SIAM Council, SIAM Supercomputing Activity Group Best Paper Prize Selection Committee, SIAM Diversity Advisory Committee, Appointed representative of SIAM Council to SIAM Board, among many other leadership positions.

Kevin Zumbrun is Distinguished Professor, Mathematics, Indiana University, Bloomington. He is being recognized for his contributions in traveling wave stability and his exceptional mentoring of graduate students and post-doctoral researchers. Zumbrun has been the recipient of the SIAM SIAG/APDE prize for best paper on PDE, has served on the Editorial Board for the SIAM Journal on Mathematical Analysis, and has been involved with organizing of previous SIAM conferences.

In addition to raising the visibility of applied mathematics and computational science, the SIAM Fellows Program helps makes SIAM members more competitive for awards and honors as well as leadership positions in the broader society.
