SIAM-AMS Student Media Fellows Program

SIAM, in collaboration with the American Mathematical Society (AMS) and with generous financial support from Philippe and Claire-Lise Tondeur, is launching a webinar series aimed at graduate students interested in learning about career possibilities outside traditional academic institutions (in business, entrepreneurship, industry, government, nonprofits, etc.). These webinars will include live interviews with mathematicians who work in this arena, with each interview conducted by a SIAM-AMS Student Media Fellow.

Each year’s cohort of Fellows will be selected through a competition open to all students enrolled in a graduate program in the mathematical sciences in the U.S. or Canada. We are looking for Fellows who are passionate about industry careers and who have a talent for connecting with people both in person and through online media.

The selected Fellows will be provided with interview and media training from Philadelphia’s public media station, WHYY, during the four-day period of November 12-15, 2019. Applicants must be available during this period to be eligible. The media training and first interview will both be conducted during the four-day period, with 3-5 more interviews conducted by each Fellow over the year of their tenure. Travel to interview sites and technical support will be provided.

To apply, students must post a video submission no more than four minutes long highlighting their ability and desire to be a SIAM-AMS Student Media Fellow. The video might simply be a monologue about a mathematical interest suitable for a broad audience, or it might be a mini-interview with a classmate or professor. Feel free to be creative! Post it on a video site that we can access (YouTube, Vimeo, etc.) and add the following information to the form linked here:

  • A link to your video
  • Basic contact information (your name and how you prefer to be addressed, email, cell phone number, and home address)
  • Your graduate program, the degree you expect to complete and when, and your anticipated academic schedule during the year November 2019–October 2020
  • A brief biographical sketch that highlights any aspects of your experience that are relevant to your serving as a host and that gives a sense of how the experience of being a webinar host would have an impact on your professional development

Submissions must be made here by September 30, 2019 October 14, 2019 (Deadline Extended), and the selection of Fellows will be completed by October 31. Questions about the program can also be sent to [email protected].
