New SIAM Activity Group on Data Science

A new SIAM Activity Group is here and it may look familiar.

In July, the SIAM Council approved the new SIAM Activity Group on Data Science (SIAG/DATA) as a broader rescope of the SIAM Activity Group on Data Mining and Analytics (SIAG/DMA). The new activity group, which replaces SIAM Activity Group on Data Mining, will advance the mathematics of data science, expanding SIAM Activity Group on Data Mining's existing focus to include the mathematical, statistical, and computational foundations of data science, in addition to applications of data science to other fields of science and across technology and society.

The SIAM Conference on Mathematics of Data Science (MDS) will serve as the SIAM Activity Group's flagship conference. The inaugural MDS20 took place virtually this May, with the next conference planned for the spring of 2022.

The SIAM Activity Group on Data Science will sponsor the annual SIAM International Conference on Data Mining (SDM) with its next meeting scheduled to be held virtually April 29, 2021 through May 1, 2021.

The initial slate of officers for the new SIAM Activity Group are Hans De Sterck (Chair), Gitta Kutyniok (Vice Chair), Karen Willcox (Program Director), and Danai Koutra (Secretary). All officers have been appointed for the duration of one year.  In the latter of 2021, members of the SIAM Activity Group on Data Science will elect new officers for the two-year period of 2022-2023.

SIAM members with a research interest in data science should take the opportunity to join the SIAM Activity Group on Data Science (SIAG/DATA) when they renew their SIAM membership this fall, or any time at my.siam.org.
