PHILADELPHIA, PA – The Society for Industrial and Applied Mathematics (SIAM) presented Lisa J. Fauci of Tulane University with the 2016 AWM-SIAM Sonia Kovalevsky Lecture prize, which highlights significant contributions of women to applied or computational mathematics. Fauci received her award and delivered her associated lecture, “Biofluids of Reproduction: Oscillators, Viscoelastic Networks and Sticky Situations,” at the 2016 SIAM Annual Meeting in Boston, Massachusetts on July 12.

Fauci is recognized for her pioneering contributions to mathematical and computational modeling of aquatic locomotion, microorganism motility, and fluid dynamics of human reproduction. Her career combines rigorous asymptotic analysis and biological data to validate computational models, a history of service to the community, and a lasting legacy of mentoring early career scientists.

Fauci is Pendergraft Nola Lee Haynes Professor of Mathematics and Associate Director, Center for Computational Science (CCS) at Tulane University. She has held visiting positions at both the University of Utah and New York University. She has served on the editorial board of several journals and is currently an Associate Editor of Science Advances (AAAS).

Fauci received her BS from Pace University and her MS and PhD (1986) in Mathematics from the Courant Institute of Mathematical Sciences, New York University.

Her research interests include numerical analysis, scientific computing, fluid dynamics, and mathematical biology, in particular, the application of computational fluid dynamics to understanding biological processes such as sperm motility, the neuromechanics of locomotion, and phytoplankton dynamics in the ocean.

The AWM-SIAM Sonia Kovalevsky Lecturer receives a certificate signed by the Presidents of AWM and SIAM. Established in 2002 by the two organizations, the AWM-SIAM Sonia Kovalevsky Lecture is awarded annually at the SIAM Annual Meeting.
