Apply: 2022 Graduate Student Mathematical Modeling Camp and Mathematical Problems in Industry Workshop

Graduate Student Mathematical Modeling Camp

The Graduate Student Mathematical Modeling (GSMM) Camp is a four-day summer training experience focused on graduate-level training and career development. Students work in teams to model and analyze problems posed by invited faculty mentors (see here for examples from past camps). Team members thus develop the type of modeling and problem-solving skills prized by industrial researchers, but in a guided setting. Scientific computation is an important component of each problem.

The 17th Annual Graduate Student Mathematical Modeling Camp will take place June 8-11, 2022 at the University of Delaware in Newark, DE. Graduate students and advanced undergraduates in math or math-adjacent fields are encouraged to apply. Applications for the GSMM Camp are due in mid-April. Apply now.

The GSMM Camp is run in conjunction with the Mathematical Problems in Industry Workshop taking place the week following the Camp at Worcester Polytechnic Institute (WPI) in Worcester, MA. See below for more details.

Mathematical Problems in Industry Workshop

The MPI Workshop is a weeklong gathering held annually that brings together researchers in the mathematical scientists and representatives from industry looking for mathematical insight into their R&D projects. On the first day, industry representatives present their problems to the whole group. These problems vary widely in nature from those requiring basic physical modeling to those requiring significant computation. For the rest of the week, the workshop participants break up into small working groups of senior faculty and attending scientists, postdoctoral fellows, graduate students, and the industry representatives to discuss and tackle the problems in an informal setting. These sessions culminate in presentations on the final day and written reports in the months following the workshop.

Students who have not attended a prior MPI Workshop or similar event are expected to take part in the Graduate Student Mathematical Modeling (GSMM) Camp taking place a week earlier. With the skills obtained at the GSMM Camp, campers become valuable participants in the problem-solving teams at the Workshop, which also provides mentoring and networking opportunities with academic and industrial representatives. We expect that most participants will automatically be registered for and supported at the workshop.

The 38th Annual MPI Workshop will be held June 13-17, 2022 at Worcester Polytechnic Institute (WPI). For more information, please visit the 2022 MPI Workshop website. You can register for the workshop here.

Students participating in the GSMM Camp and MPI Workshop are supported by the National Science Foundation and by SIAM through the James Crowley Fund for Student Support. We expect to be able to offer full support to all participants.
