Red Sock Award for Best Posters at DS19

By Andrew Bernoff

The SIAM Activity Group on Dynamical Systems (SIAG/DS) presents the Red Sock Award for the best poster presentations in dynamical systems by a student or postdoc at the SIAM Conference on Applications of Dynamical Systems. Out of 95 posters presented during two evening sessions at DS19, which took place last week in Snowbird, Utah, seven received recognition at the end of the conference.

The prize is named in honor of James A. Yorke and his distinctive footwear, and each winner receives $100 and a pair of red socks. Red sock poster prizes have been awarded for over two decades, and the award was made an official SIAM Prize in 2013.

Five of the seven poster prize winners pose with their coveted red socks at the 2019 SIAM Conference of Applications of Dynamical Systems. Front row (left to right): Andrus Giraldo (University of Auckland), Stefan Awender (University of Alaska Fairbanks), Brittany Lemmon (University of Nevada, Reno), Rebecca Santorella (Brown University) and Priya Subramanian (University of Leeds). Back row (left to right): chief judge Alan Champneys, chief judge Alberto Carrassi, and James A. Yorke (for whom the prize is named).

The panel of judges was chaired by Alan Champneys and Alberto Carrassi. The awardees and the title of their prize-winning posters are as follows:

  • Jassem Bourahmah (Georgia State University): "Synaptic Dynamics and Bursting in Neural Networks"
  • Andrus Giraldo (University of Auckland): "Dynamic Complexity of Two Coupled Photonic Crystal Nanocavities"
  • Kiersten Utsey (University of Utah): "A Mathematical Model of Flagellar Gene Regulation and Construction in
    Salmonella Enterica"
  • Stefan Awender (University of Alaska Fairbanks): "Stability Analysis of Abstract Ecological Networks and the Beaufort Sea Food Web"
  • Brittany Lemmon (University of Nevada, Reno): "Contagion Dynamics on Adaptive Networks: Norovirus as a Case Study"
  • Rebecca Santorella (Brown University): "Using Diffusion Maps in Equation Free Modelling"
  • Priya Subramanian (University of Leeds): "Mode Interactions and Superlattice Patterns."

Congratulations to everyone who participated in the poster sessions!
